The post 25 Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2023 appeared first on Consequence.

It’s 2023, and we’re previewing all of the music, movies and television that we’re excited about this year with a series of lists. We’ve also published our Rising Artists to Watch list; check it out here, and look out for more roundups this week.

Looking forward at 2023’s most anticipated new series, what stands out is the diversity of stories being told, from an ever-greater range of creators. There’s big-budget spy capers and World War II dramas to look forward to, but also smaller-scale stories from folks like Pete Davidson and Rian Johnson. There are sci-fi adaptations and unconventional superheroes, but also series set in the worlds of ’70s rock and roll, liberal arts academia, and a galaxy far far away.

2023 may feature slightly fewer series than years past, but that’s not exactly a complaint — especially since there are so many riches to explore across the broadcast, cable, and streaming worlds. In fact, that’s why we limited this list strictly to new series, as opposed to returning (as there are also tons of shows returning for new seasons that have us hyped, from Loki to Ted Lasso to Succession). TV is vast, and rich, and we can watch it in the safety and comfort of our homes. TV remains a gift.

The 1619 Project (Hulu)

Host: Nikole Hannah-Jones
Network/Platform: Hulu
Release Date: January 26, 2023

If you haven’t checked out The 1619 Project, Nikole Hannah-Jones’ engrossing and definitive history of the consequence of slavery in the United States, this new Hulu limited series offers a gateway to an important education. Across six episodes — titled “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear,” and “Justice” — The 1619 Project paints a vivid portrait of this country’s shameful legacy, while also exploring how Black Americans have been central to our national story. — Spencer Dukoff

Anticipated TV Shows 2023

Shrinking (Apple TV+)

Created by: Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel
Cast: Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Michael Urie
Network/Platform: Apple TV+
Release Date: January 27, 2023

In 2022, Harrison Ford became a bonafide TV star thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, and now he’s following that up as a supporting player in Shinking, created by Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence, Ted Lasso co-star Brett Goldstein, and Jason Segel. But the show is focused around Segel’s Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist who decides to start being more honest with his patients — and immediately finds that the repercussions are massive. — L.S.M.

The Consultant

Anticipated TV Shows 2023

The Consultant (Prime Video)

Created by: Tony Basgallop
Cast: Christoph Waltz, Nat Wolff, Brittany O’Grady, Aimee Carrero
Network/Platform: Prime Video
Release Date: February 24, 2023

Normally, the story of a consultant hired to restore order at a gaming startup would be the premise for a workplace comedy, but this is Christoph Waltz we’re talking about here. The man can take any dialogue written for him and make it sound menacing. In the trailer for The Consultant, Waltz’s character describes himself as a “monster” and an employee calls him a “sociopath,” so it’s pretty obvious viewers are in for some fascinating dark moments. — E.F.

True Lies

True Lies (CBS)

Created by: Matt Nix
Cast: Steve Howey, Ginger Gonzaga, Erica Hernandez, Omar Miller, Mike O’Gorman, Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye
Network/Platform: CBS
Release Date: March 1, 2023

Given the open-ended nature of True Lies’ central premise, it’s actually a bit surprising that it’s taken this long for the 1994 James Cameron film to be brought to the screen as an ongoing series. But hey, it’s happening now on CBS, with Steve Howey (Shameless) as the spy living undercover in the suburbs, and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) as the housewife who discovers her husband’s secret life. Anthony Hemingway (American Crime Story) directs the pilot, and Burn Notice creator Matt Nix is running the show, and even if this show turns out to be another Burn Notice… well, Burn Notice was an awful lot of fun. — L.S.M.

Daisy Jones and the Six (Prime Video)

Created by: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Cast: Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Nabiyah Be, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse, Sebastian Chacon, Tom Wright
Network/Platform: Prime Video
Release Date: March 3, 2023

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel, Daisy Jones and the Six, written as a fictionalized oral history about a ’70s rock band that took the world by storm, gave us the gift of its titular character, Daisy Jones (not-so-subtly based on Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac), a female character who was fed up of simply always being “the muse” –– she wanted to rock out, too. Starring Riley Keough as Daisy and Sam Claflin as her bandmate and star-crossed lover Billy Dunne, with a script by (500) Days of Summer duo Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, Daisy Jones will be a must-watch for music lovers everywhere. — Cady Siregar

Lucky Hank (AMC)

Executive Producers: Paul Lieberstein, Aaron Zelman
Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Mireille Enos, Diedrich Bader, Sara Amini, Cedric Yarbrough, Suzanne Cryer
Network/Platform: AMC
Release Date: March 19, 2023

In his first major TV role since Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk plays William Henry Devereaux, Jr., an English department chairman undergoing a midlife crisis at an underfunded Pennsylvania college, with Kyle MacLachlan serving as his nemesis and Ralston College’s President Dickie Pope. With Oscar Nuñez of The Office fame sweetening the pot as the dean of Ralston College and Hank’s friend, the cast alone indicates a looming hit for AMC. — E.F.

White House Plumbers

Anticipated TV Shows 2023

White House Plumbers (HBO)

Created by: Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux, Domhnall Gleeson, Lena Headey, Kiernan Shipka, Ike Barinholtz, Yul Vazquez, David Krumholtz, Rich Sommer, Kim Coates, Liam James, Kathleen Turner, Judy Greer
Network/Platform: HBO
Release Date: March 23, 2023

No, White House Plumbers is not the story of the professionals who had to deal with the Trump administration allegedly flushing sensitive documents down the toilet. It’s actually another true-story tale about corruption and paranoia in the Oval Office, this time during the presidency of Richard Nixon. Starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux as Watergate masterminds E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, this series is perfect for fans of fictional powerful-people-acting-foolish shows like Succession and Veep. — S.D.

Tiny Beautiful Things

Anticipated TV Shows 2023

Tiny Beautiful Things (Hulu)

Created by: Liz Tigelaar
Cast: Kathryn Hahn, Sarah Pidgeon, Quentin Plair, Tanzyn Crawford, Owen Painter, Merritt Wever, Elizabeth Hinkler, Michaela Watkins
Network/Platform: Hulu
Release Date: April 7, 2023

Beginning first as an advice column from Cheryl Strayed (Wild), the author and columnist compiled the most impactful inquiries into 2012’s Tiny Beautiful Things. It was adapted for the stage by Hamilton’s Thomas Kail and My Big Fat Greek Wedding writer Nia Vardalos in 2016, and now, Hulu is producing their own adaptation of Tiny Beautiful Things, with Kathryn Hahn set to star.

Though the original novel took a more anthology-style form, it appears that the new TV show will be focusing on Hahn taking on the role of “Sugar,” marking the second time Cheryl Strayed has been portrayed on screen. But one thing is certain about Tiny Beautiful Things — the stories that populate the original novel are nothing short of profound, and it’ll be a fascinating artistic experiment to represent them in an eight-episode series. — Paolo Ragusa

Mrs. Davis

Mrs. Davis (Peacock)

Created by: Damon Lindelof, Tara Hernandez
Cast: Betty Gilpin, Jake McDorman, Margo Martindale, Andy McQueen, Ben Chaplin, David Arquette, Elizabeth Marvel, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ashley Romans, Katja Herbers
Network/Platform: Peacock
Release Date: April 20, 2023

Don’t know if there’s a better way to explain this show than the logline provided by Peacock: “‘Mrs. Davis’ is the world’s most powerful algorithm. Simone is the nun devoted to destroying Her. Who ya got?” This is mostly because that’s pretty much all we have to share about the plot of this upcoming series, except it’s executive produced by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers, Lost) and features an intriguing cast including Betty Gilpin, Jake McDorman, Ben Chaplin, Margo Martindale, David Arquette, Elizabeth Marvel, Katja Herbers, and Chris Diamantopoulos. — L.S.M.

American Born Chinese (Disney+)

Created by: Kelvin Yu
Cast: Michelle Yeoh, Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, Jim Liu, Sydney Taylor, Stephanie Hsu, Poppy Liu
Network/Platform: Disney+
Release Date: Spring 2023

It’s not quite the Everything Everywhere All at Once reunion we’re hoping for, as Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan may not interact too much in the context of the show. But spiritually there’s a little bit of that vibe to the new Disney+ series, which adapts the graphic novels of the same name for an action-filled story seeped in Chinese mythology. Newcomer Ben Wang stars as a young man dealing with his own identity issues just as a new exchange student arrives at his school, and draws him into a wild new world of supernatural adventure. — L.S.M.

Masters of the Air

Anticipated TV Shows 2023

Band of Brothers (HBO)

Written by: John Orloff, Graham Yost
Cast: Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Barry Keoghan, Raff Law
Network/Platform: Apple TV+
Release Date: Spring 2023

The pitch here is simple: What Band of Brothers did for the Western front, and The Pacific did for the Pacific theater, Masters of the Air will do for the aerial battles of World War II. The big difference is that while Masters of the Air is produced by Tom Hanks’ Playtone Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, the series will debut on Apple TV+ instead of HBO. But the directing line-up is very strong, with Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, No Time to Die), Dee Rees (Mudbound), Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, Captain Marvel), and Tim Van Patten (The Pacific, The Sopranos), and the vast ensemble cast includes future Doctor Ncuti Gatwa and future Oscar nominee Austin Butler. In short: This will be an unskippable history lesson. — L.S.M.

WandaVision (Disney+)

Created by: Jac Schaeffer
Cast: Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, Debra Jo Rupp, Emma Caulfield Ford, David Payton, David Lengel, Asif Ali, Amos Glick, Kate Forbes , Brian Brightman , Joe Locke,, Sasheer Zamata, Patti LuPone
Network/Platform: Disney+
Release Date: TBA 2023

Without a doubt, one of the best surprises to come from WandaVision was Kathryn Hahn getting to go full bad-ass witch as Agatha Harkness, so the announcement of a spinoff series centered around Hahn, from WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, was the best sort of news. Set to feature not just Hahn but many other WandaVision cast members — including Emma Caulfield Ford and Debra Jo Rupp — there’s another huge reason to be excited about this one: Aubrey Plaza is also joining the MCU with her role in this series, and she’ll be getting her witch on hardcore. — L.S.M.

Ahsoka

The Mandalorian (Disney+)

Developed by: Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni
Cast: Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Hayden Christensen, Eman Esfandi, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ray Stevenson
Network/Platform: Disney+
Release Date: TBA 2023

After being introduced in Season 2 of The Mandalorian in 2020, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are building a spin-off limited series about the life and times of Jedi Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson) for Disney+. Ahsoka’s appearance in The Mandalorian was a major highlight, and with so few of Disney’s new Star Wars series focusing on the Jedi, it’s exciting to get more story out of the time in between the prequels, the original trilogy, and the sequels. Not only that, Ahsoka is already a fan favorite, and Rosario Dawson has proven to be a terrific anchor for the tense sci-fi saga. — P.R.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Nickelodeon)

Developed by: Albert Kim
Cast: Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee
Network/Platform: Netflix
Release Date: TBA 2023

The original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series is already a perfect show, but it’s exciting to think what kind of heights to which Netflix will take their own live-action project. They’ve been pretty tight-lipped on the details of the actual show beyond the basics, but what we do know about are their efforts to maintain a diverse cast that accurately reflects the cultural inspirations of the series. It’s the first step to emotionally reclaiming Airbender back from the notoriously bad, white-washed, and abysmal M. Night Shyamalan live-action film adaptation that we don’t talk about –– plus we’ve got Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. C’mon. — C.S.

Bupkis (Peacock)

Written by: Pete Davidson, Judah Miller, Dave Sirus
Cast: Pete Davidson, Edie Falco, Joe Pesci, Charlie Day, Ray Romano, Kenan Thompson, Brad Garrett, Chase Sui Wonders, Simon Rex, Shane Gillis
Network/Platform: Peacock
Release Date: TBA 2023

Pete Davidson stans take notice, an exaggerated version of the comedian’s life is coming to Peacock. Drawing comparisons to shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, the show seems poised to be an absurd look at the world as seen through Davidson’s eyes. Little is known about the details of the story or when exactly it’s set to premiere, but there’s reason to hope the series will grace our screens in 2023, with the added bonus of Joe Pesci returning to our screens. — J.K.

Cast: Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, Osy Ikhile, Stanley Tucci, Olegar Fedoro, Roland Møller, Ashleigh Cummings, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Susan Lynch, Laëtitia Eïdo, Sara Martins, Leo Woodall
Network/Platform: Prime Video
Release Date: TBA 2023

News that the Russo brothers were developing a new untitled spy series with a global perspective for Prime Video first broke in 2018. Now, we have a title, a cast led by Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and a promise that the show will consist of a core original series as well as regional spinoffs set in Italy, India, and Mexico, among other locations. What does any of this mean? That’s to be seen. But with the series costing over $200 million, it’s definitely going to be interesting to see what, exactly, Citadel is. — L.S.M.

Cast: Colin Woodell, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada, Nhung Kate, Ben Robson, Ayomide Adegun, Peter Greene, Jeremy Bobb, Katie McGrath
Network/Platform: Peacock
Release Date: TBA 2023

A must-watch for John Wick fans, The Continental takes place in 1975 New York and will tell the story of how a young Winston Scott (The Flight Attendant’s Colin Woodell, inheriting the role from Ian McShane) navigated the criminal underground in order to seize control of the titular safe haven for assassins. Also appearing in the limited series are Winston’s loyal friend Charon (Ayomide Adegun) and Cormac, a new character played by Mel Gibson. Keanu Reeves likely won’t appear as John Wick since it’s a prequel, but there has been speculation he’ll make some sort of cameo. — E.F.

Gen V

Developed by: Michele Fazekas, Tara Butters
Cast: Lizze Broadway, Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn
Network/Platform: Prime Video
Release Date: TBA 2023

The Boys goes to college in this spinoff series about young super-powered individuals (if you’ve watched The Boys, you know why we’re avoiding the word “hero” here). Details beyond casting are pretty vague at this point, but the pitch on this mentions that an inspiration is The Hunger Games, and that’s basically all we need to know at this point. — L.S.M.

The Idol (HBO)

Created by: Abel Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, Sam Levinson
Cast: Lily-Rose Depp, Abel Tesfaye, Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey, Hank Azaria
Network/Platform: HBO
Release Date: TBA 2023

Helmed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) — who will return to the screen for his first acting role since his extended cameo in 2019’s Uncut GemsThe Idol follows rising pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) as she falls deeper and deeper into a self-help cult spearheaded by Tedros (Tesfaye). It’s a terrific role for The Weeknd, who followed his Uncut Gems appearance with a rebrand that saw the pop star embracing horror, death, futurism, and a flair for the dramatic and sinister. His acting chops will certainly be put to the test, especially opposite veterans like Dan Levy, Eli Roth, and the final television role of the late Anne Heche. Fellow musicians Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, and Mike Dean are also set to appear. — P.R.

Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman, Don Cheadle
Network/Platform: Disney+
Release Date: TBA 2023

We know the MCU is a lot to manage, but Marvel’s Secret Invasion is worth keeping on the radar. The Disney+ miniseries dives into one of the coolest crossover events depicted in the comics, and features returning favorites like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, and Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill alongside new characters from Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman. Plot details are pretty slim at the moment, but the presence of Ben Mendelsohn as Talos is pretty compelling on its own. — Mary Siroky

The ability spreads to the rest of the world’s female population, and soon, everything has changed. The Power’s first season has an all-female writing staff, and will debut in 2023 on Prime Video. — J.K.

Cast: Jude Law, more to be confirmed
Network/Platform: Disney+
Release Date: TBA 2023

The comparison point for the newest Star Wars series (set during essentially the same period as The Mandalorian, timeline-wise) is The Goonies (which is a very different vibe from The Mandalorian). The biggest name in the cast is Jude Law, but look for the young (unannounced) cast to likely carry the action of this coming-of-age story. — L.S.M.

Lisa Kudrow headlines this adaptation of the Terry Gilliam fantasy classic, an Apple TV+ original that has Taika Waititi behind the scenes as a co-writer and pilot director. Also serving as a co-writer? What We Do In the Shadows’ Jemaine Clement! On that basis alone, it doesn’t matter if the original Time Bandits is a childhood favorite — this will be must-see viewing, hopefully packed with the imagination and wit we’ve come to expect from a Waititi-Clement collab. — L.S.M.
