The post 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2023 appeared first on Consequence.
It’s 2023, and we’re previewing all of the music, movies, and television that we’re excited about this year with a series of lists. For more, check out our Rising Artists to Watch and Most Anticipated TV Shows lists.
Even in this age of reboots, remakes, sequels, franchises, and adaptations, it’s still easy to get excited about the upcoming year of film as an opportunity to witness original storytelling. That’s not just a reference to the films on this list that are completely unconnected to previous IP, such as Adam Driver Fights Dinosaurs and That Poor Bear With Substance Abuse Issues. Instead, we’re also hyped for films that might take their inspiration from iconic toys or comics or games, but then use those platforms as a launching pad for their own innovative narratives.
It’s a packed lineup of blockbusters as well, with some long-awaited projects finally making it to the big screen as movie theaters continue to recover after the past few years. We’ve got new films from directors like Greta Gerwig, M. Night Shyamalan, Steven Soderbergh, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and more to look forward to. Whether they premiere on the big screen in theaters or on the slightly smaller screen in our homes, it’ll be exciting to dig into another potential landmark year for the art form.
Plus, Tom Cruise is gonna drive a motorcycle off a mountain. It looks to be a great year at the movies.

Infinity Pool
Infinity Pool (NEON)
Director: Brandon Cronenberg
Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman
Studio: NEON
Release Date: January 27th, 2023
An attractive young couple gets into trouble while on vacation in an exotic but strange location — it’s maybe a premise you’ve heard before. But based on the trailer and the fact that this comes from the demented mind of Brandon Cronenberg, the potential for Infinity Pool to usurp M3GAN as the wildest horror movie of 2023 (so far, anyway) is real. — L.S.M.
Knock at the Cabin
Knock at the Cabin (Universal)
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Cast: Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn, Rupert Grint
Studio: Universal
Release Date: February 3rd, 2023
It’s M. Night Shyamalan, so there’s a chance things are going to get a bit twisty — but even at first glance, Knock at the Cabin offers an interesting premise: A young girl and her parents are taken hostage by visitors determined to prevent the apocalypse. Who to believe — Dave Bautista and Rupert Grint (!), or Jonathan Groff? We’ll find out very soon when the film hits theaters this February. — Mary Siroky
Magic Mike’s Last Dance
Magic Mike’s Last Dance (Warner Bros.)
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek Pinault
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: February 10th, 2023
At face value, Magic Mike was a cultural phenomenon about male strippers. But look a little deeper and you’ll see it’s a deeply affecting character study anchored by a top-notch performance by its lead, Channing Tatum. Steven Soderbergh is back as director after sitting out 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, which means Last Dance could re-capture some of the magic of the first film — this time, in Europe! — Spencer Dukofff
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Marvel)
Director: Peyton Reed
Cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Kathryn Newton, David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper, Katy O’Brian, Bill Murray
Studio: Disney
Release Date: February 17th, 2023
The biggest gripe about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 was that it didn’t seem to be going anywhere — too many stories that barely held their own weight and weren’t clearly building toward an Endgame-level event. Phase 5 looks to finally get those gears in motion with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will reveal Jonathan Majors as the fully-formed Kang (or at least one of his variants).
The titles for the next two ensemble films — Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars — clearly indicate Majors is our new Josh Brolin (though keep an eye out for Doctor Doom), so Ant-Man 3 is poised to be the MCU push for which we’ve been waiting. Hopefully, it can overcome the weight of its CGI to present an engaging adventure in its own right, too. — Ben Kaye
Cocaine Bear
Cocaine Bear (Universal)
Director: Elizabeth Banks
Cast: Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery-Jennings, Alden Ehrenreich, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Kristofer Hivju, Hannah Hoekstra, Aaron Holliday, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta
Studio: Universal
Release Date: February 24th, 2023
Lost drugs? Check A coked-up bear? Check. Tickets? Bought. Surprisingly inspired by a true story, Cocaine Bear is exactly what it sounds like: bear does cocaine, bear wreaks havoc. Part comedy, part slasher, Cocaine Bear might just live up to its absurd premise come its release on February 24th. — Jonah Krueger
Creed III
Creed III (MGM)
Director: Michael B. Jordan
Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Florian Munteanu, Phylicia Rashad
Studio: MGM
Release Date: March 3rd, 2023
The ninth installment of the Rocky franchise, Creed III notably puts its star Michael B. Jordan in the director’s chair, too. While this will be the first in the franchise to not feature Sylvester Stallone, there’s plenty of star power to back it up — Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad are both returning, and Jonathan Majors will be jumping in the ring as Damian “Dame” Anderson, a rival from Adonis’s past. The film hits theaters on March 3rd. — M. Siroky
65
65 (Sony Pictures)
Director: Scott Beck, Bryan Woods
Cast: Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt, Chloe Coleman, Nika King
Studio: Sony
Release Date: March 17th, 2023
Adam Driver. Crashing into a strange planet. With a bunch of dinosaurs. Produced by Sam Raimi. Why 65, you ask? It’s because Driver, playing the pilot Mills, discovers that he is crash-landed onto an unknown planet in this sci-fi thriller —– except the planet is not that unknown, since it is actually Earth, only 65 million years ago. Yep, told you that the reasoning for the “65” title was not going to disappoint. — Cady Siregar
John Wick: Chapter 4
John Wick: Chapter 4 (Lionsgate)
Director: Chad Stahelski
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, Ian McShane
Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: March 24th, 2023
As the John Wick universe expands with a limited series and spinoff movie, the fourth mainline film will simultaneously take it back to basics while raising the stakes. After faking his death, our titular hero is set to take on the entire High Table with few allies and even fewer resources at his disposal. As if the prospect of witnessing new ways to kill bad guys wasn’t already enough, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, and singer Rina Sawayama (making her feature film debut) are exciting new additions to the franchise. — Eddie Fu
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Paramount)
Director: Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley
Cast: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant
Studio: Paramount
Release Date: March 31st, 2023
We’ve been hurt before, but Dungeons & Dragons players are ready to roll the dice on a new DnD film franchise. The cast is all charming, led by Chris Pine, Rege-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, and villainous Hugh Grant, the trailers have a couple of solid jokes, and the Owlbear looks spectacular. — Wren Graves
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Nintendo)
Director: Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic
Cast: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, Kevin Michael Richardson
Studio: Universal
Release Date: April 7th, 2023
Yes, it’s really happening. We’re finally going to hear Chris Pratt’s Mario in action, and not just the odd “ooh” and “aah” we’ve heard from the trailers. The Super Mario Bros. film has a stacked voice cast in addition to Pratt’s Mario, including Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Jack Black as Bowser as our heroes embark on an adventure to save the mushroom kingdom. It’s a-me, already knowing I’m seeing this in theaters. — C.S.
Evil Dead Rise
Evil Dead Rise (Warner Bros.)
Director: Lee Cronin
Cast: Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: April 21st, 2023
Look, moms can be scary sometimes. Motherhood can be scary. That’s something that Beth discovers in Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise, when she discovers that her old sister Ellie is having a bit of a tough time raising three kids on her own in a grimy L.A. apartment. As in, Ellie seems that she’d now rather eat her kids’ brains than cook them some macaroni and cheese and kiss them good night. Or, rather, she’d kiss her kids good night — just don’t expect them to have a face left. — C.S.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV+)
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, Jack White, Sturgill Simpson
Studio: Paramount/Apple TV+
Release Date: May 2023
Based on an award-winning book telling a compelling true story of the 1920s, Killers of the Flower Moon follows the early iteration of the FBI as it investigates murdered Osage people who found oil on their land. Release Date: May 5th, 2023
Just as he transitions into his new role as co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn is bringing his trilogy of MCU films to a close with the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. While we all prepare for the emotional journey promised (someone important is probably gonna die, and it’ll probably be one of your faves), we can still look forward to one last burst of Gunn’s irreverent humor as Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot once again try to save the galaxy, in their own special way. — L.S.M.

Release Date: May 19th, 2023
I’m a simple man — I like cold beer on a hot day, and I like it when fast cars go fast. The newest member of the Fast and the Furious family is as likely to be excellent as it is terrible, but by God the pedals will hit the metals, so it can never be a total disappointment. — W.G.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a major hit, becoming the first non-Disney/Pixar film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in seven years. Now, five years later, the long-awaited sequel is swinging in: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks to be even more expansive than the original, and will feature six different Spider-Man universes with specific art styles attached to each one. With an equally stacked cast as the first film and the promise of more stylized and creative animation, Across the Spider-Verse is set to be one of the biggest animated films of the year. — Paolo Ragusa
The Flash
The Flash (Warner Bros.)
Director: Andy Muschietti
Cast: Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, Ben Affleck
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: June 16th, 2023
The star of this movie was arrested three times last year before seeking treatment for “complex mental health issues,” and nothing Ezra Miller does on-screen will be watched as closely as their preceding promotional circuit. We don’t know how Miller is going to talk about their issues, but Warner Bros. Discovery believes The Flash is worth some risk, and despite the disturbing allegations surrounding its now-pentient star, there have been enough rumors about the film’s multiversal plotline to keep us interested in the final product. — W.G.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Disney)

Studio: Lucasfilm
Release Date: June 30th, 2023
When asked about passing off the character to another character, Harrison Ford once said, “I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone.” So it’s a real treat for Indy superfans to be able to see the iconic 80-year-old actor suiting up for one more adventure, this time with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilso along for the ride (and John Rhys-Davies returning as Sallah). It’s the first Indiana Jones film without Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair, but with James Mangold (Logan, 3:10 to Yuma, Ford v. Ferrari) helming this installment, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic. — S.D.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (Paramount)

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: July 14th, 2023
Magic comes and magic goes, and right now Tom Cruise has magic. Top Gun: Maverick hummed along with his old razzle-dazzle, and the 60-year-old superstar is carrying a lot of mojo into the run-up to Dead Reckoning: Part One. His seventh turn as Ethan Hunt is pitched as the most dangerous yet, and that tends to mean more from a man who does his own death-defying stunts. — W.G.
Barbie
Barbie (Warner Bros.)
Director: Greta Gerwig
Cast: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Kate McKinnon
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: July 21st, 2023
From the mind of Greta Gerwig, the accomplished director of Lady Bird and Little Women, comes a new thorough examination of love, loss, and life’s greatest question — Barbie? Starring megastars like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the flick is set to hit theaters this summer to offer filmgoers a flashy story of the plasticity of perfection. – J.K.
Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer (Universal Pictures)

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh
Studio: Universal
Release Date: July 21st, 2023
Rather than using computer-generated graphics, director Christopher Nolan used real explosives to recreate the Trinity nuclear test depicted in Oppenheimer. That artistic ambition alone should be enough to convince you to check out this history of the atomic bomb’s creation. But if it isn’t, maybe the stacked cast will: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh compose one of cinema’s most exciting ensembles in a long time. — S.D.
Blue Beetle
Cobra Kai (Netflix)
Director: Angel Manuel Soto
Cast: Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillén
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: August 18th, 2023
Warner Bros. is in a messy state of upheaval: It’s been painful to see projects (Batgirl) and directions (Henry Cavill’s return as Superman) get unceremoniously scuttled, even as it’s exciting to know James Gunn and Peter Safran are plotting a new, calculated path forward for the DC Extended Universe.
But one film that’s not only survived the shakeup but has actually been upgraded from HBO Max to cinemas is Blue Beetle. Coming from director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the movie stars Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña as the young hero. Blue Beetle will be the first DC or Marvel feature headlined by a Latino superhero, and with a team of Latino filmmakers behind it, that’s a milestone many fans are hotly anticipating. — B. Kaye
A Haunting in Venice
Death on the Nile (20th Century Studios)
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Cast: Kyle Allen, Kenneth Branagh, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Kelly Reilly, Michelle Yeoh
Studio: 20th Century
Release Date: September 15th, 2023
Okay, after the lackluster Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s third Poirot excursion might have us less hyped than before. But Glass Onion, among other projects, has whetted our appetites for whodunnits, and a person who is not physically excited for the chance to see Tina Fey and Michelle Yeoh face off on screen is a person whose taste is seriously suspect. If the first two films were not your jam, then this will be an easy pass, but even with that said — Tina Fey! Michelle Yeoh! The hype is real. — L.S.M.
Dune: Part Two
Dune (Warner Bros.)
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Tim Blake Nelson
Studio: Warner Bros.
Release Date: November 3rd, 2023
When Dune hit theaters in October 2021, it left off on a major cliffhanger, and late 2023 felt like an eternity away. Here we are at the top of the year, and some incredibly exciting casting has rounded out the second installment of Denis Villeneuve’s epic space saga — when we return to Arrakis, Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya will be joined by Austin Butler and Florence Pugh. — M. Siroky

Release Date: November 17th, 2023
When it comes to book-to-film adaptations, Lionsgate truly knocked it out of the park with The Hunger Games franchise. This prequel installment, based on the book by original trilogy author Suzanne Collins, will see director Francis Lawrence returning to the franchise, with the wonderful Rachel Zegler set to lead us back into Panem as Lucy Gray Baird this fall. — M. Siroky
The Killer
Michael Fassbender, photo by Heather Kaplan
Director: David Fincher
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton
Studio: Netflix
Release Date: TBA
David Fincher first announced this adaption of a French graphic novel series in 2007, and 2023 might finally be the year we get to see this long-awaited Se7en reunion between the famed director and writer Andrew Kevin Walker. Not too much is known about the story, aside from the fact that it will be about, well, a killer — specifically an assassin played by Michael Fassbender. (Man, where has he been lately? Filming this, one supposes!) — L.S.M.
