25 greatest ‘Charmed’ episodes, ranked worst to best [PHOTOS]

On October 7, 1998, a series premiered that would go on to “charm” viewers for eight years. The Halliwell sisters find out they are powerful witches, who must use their combined “Powers of Three” to protect innocents and save the world from the dark side. Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and (later) Rose McGowan took on the roles of Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Paige, and made “Charmed” one of the biggest hits for the fledgling WB network.

The sisters evolve as witches, with powers strengthening and changing, which often leads to some of the funniest moments of the series – such as Piper learning to control her new ability to blow things up instead of just freezing them, and Phoebe adjusting to her active power of levitation. From a demon that preys on fear, to one who brings horror movies to life, to an old hag intent on kidnapping a powerful magical baby, the sisters fight every kind of evil imaginable – without using their magic for personal gain. Along the way, they are each lured by the dark side, and turned into various creatures, including a banshee, a wendigo and fury. Phoebe is especially vulnerable, when she falls for demon-in-hunky-man-disguise Cole Turner (Julian McMahon) – and becomes his Queen of the Underworld. The sisters also have fun transformations, even becoming goddesses at one point.

But it’s Prue’s conflict with her role as surrogate mother to her younger sisters, Piper’s struggle to find happiness with her Whitelighter Leo (Brian Krause), Phoebe’s yearning to find true love and have a family and Paige’s desire to find her identity in her new family that bring heart to the series. While the supernatural aspect in fun, it’s at its best when Grams (Jennifer Rhodes), mom Patty (Finola Hughes), dad Victor (James Read) and Leo are part of the action.
