How A 22-Year-Old Who Says He Was Sexually Abused Can Get His Life Back On Track

A man who says he believes he was abused as a child and that his mom and grandma ignored it, gets advice for moving forward and taking charge of his life.

Matthew says he was sexually abused by a neighbor while he was growing up. He says that his mother and grandma, who raised him, missed the signs and have not helped him to overcome his past. He says the only person who has helped him “move in a positive direction” is his girlfriend, Kaden, who is 24 years older than him.

However, Matthew’s mother and grandmother say they don’t believe the 22-year-old was abused. They claim that Kaden has “brainwashed” Matthew into believing he was abused and is using him for money – an accusation she denies.

After speaking with the family, Dr. Phil offers Matthew advice on moving forward.

“I think you’re kind of struggling, and I think mentally and emotionally, you’re a little bit confused about what has happened, what is happening and what should happen,” he tells Matthew. “[Kaden] may have the best intentions in the world, but so far as a therapist or a life coach, she is blatantly incompetent.”

He offers Matthew the opportunity to go to an intensive workshop to discover who he is and what he wants in life. “I would love to give you the opportunity to kind of explore yourself and get a grip on what’s reality, and what’s fantasy, and set some goals and find out really where you are and see what you want to do,” he tells Matthew.

Matthew agrees.
