21 Savage was born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph in London, England, and moved to the United States at a young age. In 2006, his non-immigrant Visa expired, leading to his 2019 detainment by the Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE).

“When you ain’t got no choice, you should be exempt,” 21 Savage said at the time to the Associated Press. “It’s not like I was 30, woke up, and moved over here. I’ve been here since I was like 7 or 8, probably younger than that. I didn’t know anything about visas and all that. I just knew we were moving to a new place.”

Last year, he became a “lawful permanent resident of the United States with the freedom to travel internationally,” allowing him to perform outside of the country for the first time in his career. Since his legal battle has ended, the Grammy Award-winning rapper has performed shows in Paris, London, and Canada.

Fans of 21 Savage can hopefully anticipate the rapper’s true story from the project after he revealed his chart-topping rhymes are essentially embellished and “fiction as hell.”

“I just think of it in my head,” he explained. “Some of it be based off of real life, but a lot of it be creative stories.”
