21 Savage has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming biopic, titled American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, in which Donald Glover and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin will both play the rapper. Watch it below.
According to a press release, the clip shows three generations of 21 Savage “in the heat of a personal crisis” while doubling as a music video for a brand new song from the artist.
American Dream will cover 21’s infamous 2018 arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which revealed that he was actually born in the UK before moving to Atlanta and making his name there as a rapper.
At the time, 21 Savage’s lawyer said he “never hid his immigration status from the US government.” During an interview with Good Morning America, 21 noted that his arrest came shortly after he criticized Trump’s extreme immigration policies with his song “a lot.”
The movie was co-directed by Glover’s brother and frequent collaborator Stephen Glover with Jamal Olori, Fam Udeorji, and Luis Perez. The film was co-written by Olori and Stephen Glover, and features special appearances from Gail Bean, Druski, Jabari Banks, Chad Lindberg, Victoria Pedretti, Young Mazino, and Natasha Lyonne.
The movie currently doesn’t have a release date. It will also be accompanied by a soundtrack, which you can pre-order here.
Under his Childish Gambino moniker, Glover has collaborated musically with 21 Savage on multiple occasions. In 2018, 21 contributed ad-libs to Gambino’s Grammy-winning hit “This Is America.” That same year, Gambino returned the favor with an appearance on 21’s album i am > i was, and more recently, 21 guested on Gambino’s “12.38” in 2020.
Both artists are expected to release solo material at some point this year. This past December, 21 Savage said at his first-ever London concert that he was getting ready to drop his next album. Meanwhile, Gambino recently told TMZ that he is planning to drop another album “soon.”
