Searchlight Pictures picked up four big Oscar wins for “Poor Things” at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10. Most notably, Emma Stone won Best Actress after a nail-biting race with SAG Award winner Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). The other nominees were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”).

Hilary Swank became the first leading lady to take home the gold for Searchlight (then called Fox Searchlight Pictures) for “Boys Don’t Cry” in 2000. Next was Natalie Portman, who won for “Black Swan” in 2011. But over the last decade, the production company has established its dominance as one of the top film studios for female-driven Oscar powerhouses. Stone is the fifth Best Actress winner in seven years following Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) in 2018, Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) in 2019, McDormand again for “Nomadland” in 2021 and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) in 2022.

“Poor Things” also took home Oscars in three below-the-line races: Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Production Design. It was nominated for 11 total including Best Picture, Best Director (Yorgos Lanthimos) and Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo). In the end, Universal Pictures was the big winner with “Oppenheimer” running away with Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Score.

The 2024 Oscars hosted by Jimmy Kimmel aired on ABC (7:00-10:30pm ET/4:00-7:30pm PT) and took place in Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. This is Stone’s second Best Actress trophy, following her 2017 win for “La La Land.” She has come up short three other times: Best Supporting Actress for “Birdman” in 2015, Best Supporting Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best Picture (as a producer) for “Poor Things” in 2024.
