The films in the running for the 2024 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Napoleon.” Our odds currently indicate that “Godzilla Minus One” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Creator” (18/5), the new “Guardians” entry (9/2), “Napoleon” (9/2), and the latest “Mission: Impossible” chapter (9/2).

Included among the 17 individuals in this lineup are 13 first-timers who constitute the category’s largest newcomer rate since the minimum annual amount of nominated films was set at five in 2011. This vast majority comprises all four “Godzilla Minus One” team members (Tatsuji Nojima, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Takashi Yamazaki), dual contender Simone Coco (“Mission: Impossible” and “Napoleon”), three artists from “The Creator” (Ian Comley, Jay Cooper, and Andrew Roberts), two from “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Theo Bialek and Alexis Wajsbrot), two more from “Mission: Impossible” (Jeff Sutherland and Alex Wuttke), and one more from “Napoleon” (Luc-Ewen Martin-Fenouillet).

The third “Guardians” volume is the 14th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to vie for this honor, while the new “Godzilla” and “Mission: Impossible” iterations are the first films in their respective franchises ever nominated here. What makes the Japanese kaiju pic’s inclusion even more groundbreaking is that Shibuya is the first woman of color to earn recognition in this category and could become its third general female champion, after Suzanne M. Benson (“Aliens,” 1987) and Sara Bennett (“Ex Machina,” 2016).

The only former winner in this group is Neil Corbould, who has an undeniably great chance of triumphing again as a simultaneous nominee for “The Creator,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Napoleon.” He was previously honored for “Gladiator” (2001) and “Gravity” (2014) and picked up additional bids for “Superman Returns” (2007), “Snow White and the Huntsman” (2013), and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2017). If he succeeds on one of his three new bids, he will join a club of 20 other visual effects artists with three or more wins.

“Guardians” nominee Guy Williams is on his fourth bid for an MCU film, following recognition for “The Avengers” (2013), “Iron Man 3” (2014), and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2018). He shares his new mention with Stephane Ceretti, who was previously nominated for the first “Guardians” entry (2015) and “Doctor Strange” (2017). That leaves “Napoleon” contender Charley Henley, whose sole preceding bid came for his work on “Prometheus” (2013).

Williams is, of course, seeking redemption against Corbould after being bested by him in 2014, while the two of them and Henley are concurrently involved in a rematch following their collective loss to the “Life of Pi” team in 2013. Also battling it out for the second time are Corbould and Ceretti, whose 2017 films were beaten by “The Jungle Book.”

The films that won in this category most recently are “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2023), “Dune” (2022), “Tenet” (2021), and “1917” (2020). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 10 on ABC.
