2024 Oscars Best Sound nominees: 9 past champs, 5 veterans and 3 rookies

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).

This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

O’Connell shares his new nomination with fellow former winners Richard King (“Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” 2004; “The Dark Knight,” 2009; “Inception,” 2011; “Dunkirk,” 2018), Willie D. Burton (“Bird,” 1989; “Dreamgirls,” 2007), and Gary A. Rizzo (“Inception”; “Dunkirk”). King is also presently recognized for his work on “Maestro” alongside returning contenders Steven A. Morrow, Jason Ruder, Tom Ozanich, and Dean Zupancic, the last two of whom are simultaneously nominated for “The Creator.”

Rounding out the “Creator” team are first-timer Ian Voigt and veteran nominees Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, the last of whom scored two sound editing victories for “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2003) and “King Kong” (2006). He and Aadahl were previously recognized together for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (2012), “Argo” (2013), and “A Quiet Place” (2019).

Joining Voigt in this year’s small subgroup of rookies are “The Zone of Interest” duo Johnnie Burn and Tarn Willers. That leaves “Mission: Impossible” nominees Chris Burdon, James H. Mather, Chris Munro, and Mark Taylor as the remaining former winners, with all but Munro having just triumphed last year for “Top Gun: Maverick.” Taylor also won for “1917” (2020), while Munro’s two victories came for “Black Hawk Down” (2002) and “Gravity” (2014).

Munro already respectively faced off against Burton and O’Connell in 2000 (“The Mummy” vs. “The Green Mile”) and 2002 (“Black Hawk Down” vs. “Pearl Harbor”), while O’Connell is also set for his first rematch with Morrow following their initial showdown in 2017 (“Hacksaw Ridge” vs. “La La Land”). Along with Taylor and former “Joker” duo Ozanich and Zupancic, Morrow (“Ford v Ferrari”) is also one of four 2020 sound mixing contenders involved in this contest.

The first three Best Sound awards went to “Sound of Metal” (2021), “Dune” (2022), and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2023). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 10 on ABC.
