The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).

This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).

McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2015) before losing for “Pinocchio” (2021) and “Elvis” (2023), Hiro followed the opposite trajectory by clinching trophies for “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Bombshell” (2020) after coming up short on his “Click” (2007) and “Norbit” (2008) nominations. Either artist would be only the fourth three-time winner in this category’s history, following Rick Baker, Ve Neill, and Greg Cannom.

Currently nominated with Hiro after losing to him in 2020 is former “Joker” artist Kay Georgiou, who stands with Nadia Stacey (“Poor Things”) as one of this lineup’s two returning contenders with no wins so far. Stacey’s own initial bid came for “Cruella” in 2022 – the year the category was conquered by the team from “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

Rounding out this bunch are “Society of the Snow” nominees David Martí and Montse Ribé, who won as a pair in 2007 on their sole previous bid for “Pan’s Labyrinth” against Hiro himself. If they end up going two-for-two, they will have been preceded in doing so by only four artists: Yolanda Toussieng (“Mrs. Doubtfire,” 1994; “Ed Wood,” 1995), David LeRoy Anderson (“The Nutty Professor,” 1997; “Men in Black,” 1998), Richard Taylor (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” 2002; “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2004), and, of course, Coulier.

The films that won in this category most recently are “The Whale” (2023), “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (2022), “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021), and “Bombshell” (2020). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 10 on ABC.
