The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).

Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

Durran is now involved in a rematch with Jacqueline West (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), who, as a nominee for “Dune,” lost alongside her two years ago to Jenny Beavan (“Cruella”). This marks West’s fifth Oscars outing, with her initial three notices having been for “Quills” (2001), “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2009), and “The Revenant” (2016). At this point, she holds the distinction of being the most recognized living costumer with zero wins, having just broken her tie with four-timer Mary Zophres.

The only other past winner in this group is Janty Yates, who happened to defeat West in the 2001 race as the costume designer for “Gladiator.” Her new nomination for “Napoleon” – which she shares with Oscars newcomer David Crossman – is her second for a Ridley Scott film. Joining Crossman in the current subset of first-time contenders are Ellen Mirojnick (“Oppenheimer”) and Holly Waddington (“Poor Things”).

This year, for only the third time in academy history after 1970 and 2004, all of the films nominated for Best Costume Design are also in the running for Best Production Design. In the former preceding case, the awards were respectively split between “Anne of the Thousand Days” and “Hello, Dolly!,” while both 2004 prizes went to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” Any of this year’s dual contenders would be the first recipient of both prizes since “Black Panther” (2019).

The films that won in this category most recently are “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2023), “Cruella” (2022), “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021), and “Little Women” (2020). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 10 on ABC.
