The 2024 MTV Movie and TV Awards Have Been Canceled

The MTV Movie (and TV) Awards have been a staple of the awards landscape for over 30 years, but this year, for the first time ever, the show is skipping a year.

According to a new report from Deadline, the MTV Movie & TV Awards will not go ahead in 2024, although it is said to be returning at some point in the future, most likely in 2025. No reason has been given for the show’s cancellation, but it’s said that MTV will be reworking the format for its future return.

The show has run continuously since 1992, with only one brief hiccup in 2020, when Vanessa Hudgens hosted a “Greatest of All Time” special due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2023 had no host, however, after the Writers Guild of America strike – and the subsequent SAG-AFTRA strike – caused host Drew Barrymore and just about every attendee to drop out of the show. Instead, it went ahead as a pre-recorded show.

The move won’t affect other MTV awards shows, like the MTV Video Music Awards, which will still go ahead as planned.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise, at this stage, that the awards show was canceled. The MTV Movie & TV Awards are usually hosted in late-May or early-June, and given we are deep into May, the lack of details was pretty telling. Still, these awards, while fun, typically don’t have the prestige of a Golden Globe or Academy Award, so we can’t imagine many are losing sleep over the cancellation.
