The biggest night in fashion is quickly approaching!

On Feb. 15, Vogue announced exciting new details about the upcoming 2024 Met Gala, including the four people who will serve as co-chairs for the event.

Held annually each year in New York City, the style extravaganza is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, formally titled The Anna Wintour Costume Center — named after Vogue's editor-in-chief, who has been a chair member of the gala since 1995.

Each year, the event brings together some of the biggest names in music, movies, TV and fashion, and this year’s event is slated to be just as star-studded.

From the theme to who is expected to attend, here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Met Gala.

The Met Gala’s theme for 2024 was announced back in November 2023. Titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the upcoming Costume Institute exhibit will feature approximately 250 items — including 15 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span over 400 years of history.

According to Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition will be shaped around three main “zones”— Land, Sea, and Sky —that pay tribute to the natural world. “It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” he said.

The walk-through will feature everything from a 17th-century English Elizabethan-era bodice to 21st-century works by modern-day fashion industry tastemakers including Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, and Connor Ives. Additionally, it will house designs by legendary names in fashion including Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy.

As Vogue announced the theme last year, eagle-eyed Hunger Games fans noted that one of the pieces on display, a butterfly dress from Sarah Burton’s spring 2011 collection, was previously worn by Elizabeth Banks’ character Effie Trinket in Catching Fire. Another notable piece that will be on display is Christian Dior’s 1949 Junon ball gown, which Natalie Portman recently wore a reimagination of during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival premiere of her film May December.

What is the 2024 Met Gala dress code?

In February 2024, Vogue announced that the Met Gala dress code for 2024 would be “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The story follows a count and countess living “in their utopia of leisure, art, and beauty,” per the publication. However, as a mob looms outside their villa, the count “must pluck a time-reversing flower from his garden until there are none left.”

Pulling from the theme of Ballard’s short story, Vogue notes the dress code is ultimately about “fleeting beauty.” The publication also suggests that the short story will likely inspire many “melancholic florals” or possibly outfits relating to music and time. Additionally, many attendees will likely opt to wear timeless archival pieces (think Kim Kardashian's controversial Marilyn Monroe gown in 2022).

The 2024 Met Gala will be co-chaired by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. The 2024 Met Gala will be Hemsworth’s first and Bad Bunny’s third.

Lopez and Zendaya, meanwhile, are seasoned Met Gala pros. This year will mark Lopez’s 13th time at the event and Zendaya’s sixth. The latter has solidified herself as “one to watch” on the steps, with many iconic Met Gala looks through the years, such as her Joan of Arc chain-mail dress in 2018 and her Cinderella look in 2019.

Alongside Zendaya, Lopez, Bad Bunny and Hemsworth, Wintour will round out this year’s official co-chairs. They will be joined by honorary chairs Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

Though an official guest list hasn’t been announced yet, it’s possible that the co-chairs will be joined by their significant others for the event, including Zendaya’s boyfriend Tom Holland, Lopez’s husband Ben Affleck, Bad Bunny’s girlfriend Gabriela Berlingeri and Hemsworth’s wife Elsa Pataky.

Seeing that TikTok’s CEO is an honorary chair, it’s also likely that this year’s event will include many more TikTok influencers, such as Dixie and Charli D'Amelio, Addison Rae, Emma Chamberlain and more.
