The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards are being handed out Sunday, February 25, from Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, CA in a show hosted by comedian, actress and “SNL” alumnus Aidy Bryant. On the film side, the nominations were dominated by “American Fiction,” “Past Lives” and “May December,” which picked up five nods apiece. Those three films are up for Best Feature along with “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.” Best Director is a contest between Andrew Haigh (“All of Us Strangers”), Todd Haynes (“May December”), William Oldroyd (“Eileen”), Ira Sachs (“Passages”) and Celine Song (“Past Lives”).

Of the nominated features, only “American Fiction” and “Past Lives” are also in the running for Best Picture at the Oscars, while none of the nominated directors are up for Academy Awards. However, on the off chance that either “American Fiction” or “Past Lives” manages to take the top prize at both the Academy Awards and the Indie Spirits, it would be the eighth time in 13 years that Film Independent and the film academy have been in alignment. Both groups chose “The Artist” (2012), “12 Years a Slave” (2014), “Birdman” (2015), “Spotlight” (2016), “Moonlight” (2017), “Nomadland” (2021) and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2023).

Scroll down to see the Indie Spirit Awards winners list live as it happens today, updated in real time. We’ve also included the complete roster of nominees in every category.

Now in their 39th year, the Spirit Awards pay tribute to independent voices working outside the major studio system in both movies and television. For the second straight year, the sponsoring Film Independent set a budget limit of $30 million for a film to be considered. It’s also the second year that the Indie Spirits are featuring gender-neutral acting categories in both film and TV/streaming. Rather than hand out trophies for Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress, the categories include no reference to gender. Instead, they honor Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance.

Best Lead Performance in a film will match Jessica Chastain (“Memory”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Trace Lysette (“Monica”), Natalie Portman (“May December”), Judy Reyes (“Birth/Rebirth”), Franz Rogowski (“Passages”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Teyana Taylor (“A Thousand and One”), Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”) and Teo Yoo (“Past Lives”). Best Supporting Performance in a film pits Erika Alexander (“American Fiction”), Oscar nominee Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Noah Galvin (“Theater Camp”), Anne Hathaway (“Eileen”), Glenn Howerton (“Blackberry”), Marin Ireland (“Eileen”), Charles Melton (“May December”), Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), Catalina Saavedra (“Rotting in the Syn”) and Ben Whishaw (“Passages”).

Among the notable indie actors who were overlooked for their film performances were Michelle Williams for “Showing Up,” Julianne Moore for “May December” and Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers.”

In the television/streaming categories, the HBO sci-fi epic “The Last of Us” and the Prime Video absurdist miniseries “I’m a Virgo” led the way, tallying four nominations apiece. Best New Scripted Series is a battle between “Beef,” “Dreaming Whilst Black,” “I’m a Virgo,” “Jury Duty” and “Slip.” Best Lead Performance  Emma Corrin (“A Murder at the End of the World”), Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”), Betty Gilpin (“Mrs. Davis”), Jharrel Jerome (“I’m a Virgo”), Zoe Lister-Jones (“Slip”), Bel Powley (“A Small Light”), Bella Ramsay (“The Last of Us”), Ramon Rodriguez (“Will Trent”) and the “Beef” duo of Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.

This year, for the first time, the Spirits feature competition in the Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series as part of the television/streaming acting categories. The nominees include Clark Backo for “The Changeling, Aria Mia Loberti for “All the Light We Cannot See,” Adjani Salmon for Dreaming Whilst Black,” Keivonn Montreal Woodard for “The Last of Us” and Kara Young for “I’m a Virgo”

Only new TV/streaming shows that have been on for one season and were released between January 1 and December 31 of 2023 were eligible.

The full list of winners is below, each marked with an X and in gold.
