The 2024 Golden Globes nominations (full list below) were announced December 11, for a ceremony that will mark the beginning of a new era for the longstanding awards show. After dissolving the scandal-plagued Hollywood Foreign Press Association and being acquired by Penske Media Eldridge, the Golden Globes will return to broadcast airwaves tomorrow on Sunday, January 7. The show, which is set to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, will honor the best film and television artistry of 2023.

“Barbie” led the nominations with nine total, including three alone in the Best Song Category. It achieved nods in Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Best Screenplay, and acting noms for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. “Oppenheimer” followed with eight nods, including supporting acting mentions for Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. as well as Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Motion Picture, Drama. “Poor Things” then nabbed seven: including supporting actor nods for Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The nominations here followed strong acknowledgment from the Gotham Awards, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and Indie Spirit noms. Charles Melton became a favorite in the Supporting Actor category at the Globes (as well as the Oscars), following wins at the Gothams and the NYFCC Awards. “Killers of the Flower Moon” got seven Globe nominations, after picking up a Best Actress win at the NYFCC Awards for Lily Gladstone as well as Best Film, and Best Film at the National Board of Review. “Past Lives” picked up five Globe nods in addition to its five Indie Spirit nods.

On the TV side, “Succession” scored nine nods. Best Drama Series was always a given, but it’s striking just now much it dominated acting categories. In Best Supporting Male Actor, Television, it scored three alone: Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, and Alexander Skarsgard. Same for Best Actor: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Kieran Culkin. Sarah Snook got a Best Actress nod, and J. Smith Cameron in Best Supporting Actress. Clearly, there’s a series to beat for Best TV Drama!

On the TV Comedy side, “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Bear” scored five nods each, including for Best TV Series. “Ted Lasso” got three and “Barry” got two. For Best Limited Series, “Beef” scored three.

While most of the traditional categories remain, the 2024 Golden Globes have implemented several major changes. In addition to the new Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category, the ceremony also added a new prize for films with large box office grosses. The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement will be given to the best film that grossed over $150 million worldwide, allowing more mainstream films to enter the award season conversation.

The 2023 Golden Globes saw Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” win Best Motion Picture in the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories, respectively. While the awards did not reflect the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” sweep that would eventually come to fruition at the Academy Awards, Ke Huy Kwan and Michelle Yeoh both won Golden Globes in categories they would eventually win at the Oscars.
