2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Drama Series

Commentary (Updated April 24, 2024): Prime Video is gearing up for a robust awards campaign for its new series “Fallout,” inspired by the popular video game series. The streamer is targeting double-digit nominations including outstanding drama series, among other categories.

The series’ director, Jonathan Nolan, along with writers Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, are set to submit the pilot episode, titled “The End,” for Emmy consideration, which hooks viewers into the action-packed tale.

Historically, Amazon has received only one drama series mentions in its tenure, coming for the second season of “The Boys” in 2021, another hit genre program. This year, Amazon is hopeful not only to secure its second nomination but potentially a third, with the addition of Donald Glover’s action-packed “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is inspired by the 2005 film featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the series spans eight episodes and follows John and Jane Smith, secret agents masquerading as a married couple, who are employed by a mysterious corporation. Glover is poised to receive multiple nominations, potentially earning up to five across acting, producing, directing, and writing categories.

Despite their potential, both series still face stiff competition from the final season of Netflix’s “The Crown.” Although reactions to the concluding portrayal of the British monarchy were mixed, history shows that such opinions might not significantly impact its Emmy prospects. For instance, despite widespread criticism, the eighth and final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” often regarded as its weakest, effortlessly secured a drama series win—even with the critically acclaimed first seasons of “Succession” and “Pose” as contenders. This suggests “The Crown” could similarly enjoy another triumph at the Emmys after sweeping in 2021.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship, and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period typically extends from June 1 to May 31 each year.
