2024 Emmy Predictions: Best Comedy Supporting Actress

Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.

At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.

Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), who is now looking to make a comeback following her show’s brief hiatus.

Past winners who could now be nominated for different series include Bebe Neuwirth (“Julia”; formerly of “Cheers”), Laurie Metcalf (“The Conners”; “Roseanne”), Cynthia Nixon (“And Just Like That”; “Sex and the City”), and Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”; “Mom”).

Actresses seeking bids for new comedy series include Carol Burnett and Laura Dern of “Palm Royale” and Joely Richardson and Kaya Scodelario of “The Gentlemen.”
