Having trouble predicting who will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”). The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”), Abby Elliott (“The Bear”), Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”), Liza Colon-Zayas (“The Bear”) and Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, a leading nine out of our 15 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Streep for “Only Murders in the Building”: Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). In Season 3, she takes on the role of aspiring actress Loretta Durkin, who begins a relationship with Martin Short‘s Oliver Putnam. Streep is a three-time Emmy winner for “Holocaust” (1978), “Angels in America” (2004) and “Five Came Back” (2017), as well as a triple Oscar champion for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979), “Sophie’s Choice” (1982) and “The Iron Lady” (2011).

More from GoldDerby

Four of our Emmyologists — Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) — instead believe Einbinder will prevail for “Hacks.” She is climbing in our odds for playing Ava Daniels, a young writer who is hired to come up with some fresh material for veteran comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). Einbinder scored back-to-back Emmy noms in 2021 and ’22, and now the show is back on Max for Season 3 after a year-long delay.

The final two pundits — Kelly Lawler (USA Today) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — think Ralph will claim victory for “Abbott Elementary.” She won this Emmy category in a bit of an upset in 2022 for her role as Barbara Howard, the conservative kindergarten teacher on the ABC mockumentary. Ralph was nominated again in 2023, but lost out to Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), who is now competing up in the lead actress race.

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is Elliott for “The Bear.” Her role of Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, the sister of Carmy and Michael, was greatly increased in Season 2, as her pregnancy and her project manager position became major storylines. This would be Elliott’s first career Emmy bid, and it would directly follow her individual nom at the Golden Globes and her ensemble victory at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category include Edebiri in 2023, Ralph in 2022, Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) in 2021, Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”) in 2020 and Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) in 2019 and ’18. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
