The 20th edition of Premios Juventud on Thursday (July 20) opened with a bang thanks to an epic reggaetón medley presented by Puerto Rican icon Daddy Yankee, who introduced the musical segment saying that reggaetón soundtracked a generation.

The riveting throwback spot included performances by Zion & Lennox, Wisin, Chencho Corleone, Angel & Khriz, among others.

Switching gears, Fuerza Regida took center stage representing música mexicana at the ceremony, hosted at the Choliseo in Puerto Rico. The Mexican-American group performed their latest single “Sabor Fresa,” powered by tubas and frontman JOP’s powerful vocals. The two performances set the vibe for the night, striking a balance of the two genres dominating Latin music today.

The first winner of the night was Mexican pop duo Ha*Ash who took the best pop album award for Haashtag. The second went to Shakira, the best pop/urban track honor for her Bizarrap-produced music session; the Colombian star would go on to become the biggest winner of the night with eight awards, including girl power for “TQG” with Karol G, and Premios Juventud female artist.

“The best luck I’ve had is with my fans. You inspire me to be better and to never give up,” said Shakira, who was there with her two children, Milan and Sasha. “To be honest, when I had self-doubt, you made me believe in myself again. When I feel fragile, you give me strength. You’ve protected me, you’ve been loyal. You celebrate my joy and are with me in my struggles. It’s because of you I want to be a better musician, a better person.”

Later in the night, Shakira was also awarded with the Agent of Change Award. Another recipient of that same award was Camila Cabello, who spoke passionately about climate change and the importance of taking action toward environmental justice.

Standout performances throughout the show included a new, salsa version of Hoobastank’s “The Reason,” which, like Premios Juventud, celebrates its 20th anniversary. The bilingual song was performed by Jonathan Moly and the rock band.

Another special throwback moment saw Mexican pop trio Camila take the stage for the first time together in 10 years. Mario Domm, Samo and Pablo Hurtado performed their new single, “Fugitivos,” and a medley of “Mientes” and “Todo Cambió.”

This year’s Premios Juventud — which aired live on Univision — debuted 15 new categories that “reflect the latest trends” in Latin music. Karol G and Peso Pluma followed Shakira winning a total of five awards.
