2023 Oscars Complete Winners List: With 7, ‘Everything Everywhere’ Wins Most Oscars Since ‘Gravity’

On Sunday evening, the reveal of the 2023 Oscars winners list brought to a close one of the longest awards seasons in recent memory. It probably felt even longer to the ultimate Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing winner, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which premiered one year ago at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. It was on March 11, a full 16 days before the now-infamous 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, that David Ehrlich reviewed the now Best Picture winner for IndieWire. Even before The Slap, there were hot dog fingers.
At the Oscars, the Daniels-directed film won the most awards that any Best Picture winner has taken home since “Slumdog Millionaire,” which picked up eight in 2008. With seven wins, “Everything Everywhere” actually won the most Oscars of any film full-stop since 2013’s “Gravity” also won seven Oscars. But the Daniels’ film was hardly alone in picking up multiples, as its greatest competitor, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” also picked up four wins, though it ultimately lost Best Picture.

“Everything Everywhere” was the film to beat, after triumphs at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, the Producers Guild Awards, the Writers Guild Awards, and the Indie Spirits. It also happens to be the biggest hit in A24’s history, a rare box-office success story for a non-franchise original title that also happens to be critically acclaimed. And a remarkable story about how you can go from making a divisive movie about a farting corpse to the industry’s highest honor in just seven years.
Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman ever to win Best Actress, and she movingly shouted out in her speech how one should never listen if someone tells you you’re past your prime. Her award, like that for Supporting Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, also serves as a de facto recognition of decades of extraordinary screen work.
Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for his heartbreaking turn in “The Whale,” something which was expected back when the film bowed at the Venice Film Festival in the fall. But some had thought he had lost momentum to Austin Butler for “Elvis.” Baz Luhrmann’s film walked away with no Oscars at all.
Nor did “The Banshees of Inisherin” win anything. Nor “The Fabelmans.” Nor “TÁR.” Nor Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness.” Many best picture winners in recent years have spread the wealth with other titles. This time it was “Everything Everywhere” and “All Quiet” splitting them between them.
Other Best Picture nominees took home just one prize apiece: “Avatar: The Way of Water” for Best Visual Effects, “Top Gun: Maverick” for Best Sound,” and Best Adapted Screenplay for “Women Talking.”
