The post 2023 Oscar Nominations: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Top Gun: Maverick, The Fabelmans, and More appeared first on Consequence.

It was a good morning for raccacoonies, Na’vi, aspiring directors, fighter pilots, and fictional composers, thanks to the Academy Awards nominations. Tuesday morning, films including Everything Everywhere All at Once, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Fabelmans, Top Gun: Maverick, and TÁR all received multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Also receiving heaps of recognition were Baz Luhrman’s Elvis, Germany’s adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, and Ruben Östlund’s social satire Triangle of Sadness, which broke through in key categories.

The nominations also confirmed the inevitable showdown between Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett for Lead Actress, as well as Oscar recognition for Lady Gaga, Rihanna (her first-ever nomination), and Mitski and David Byrne (the latter’s second nomination, after winning for the score of The Last Emperor in 1988). It was also a big morning for the band Son Lux, whose score for Everything Everywhere was nominated alongside John Williams’ work for The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Diversity wasn’t as strong as it could have been, with female directors once again shut out of the directing category (and only one woman receiving a nomination for writing, thanks to Sarah Polley’s nod for Women Talking). The acting nominations did include Angela Bassett receiving a well-deserved nod for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, though, along with Yeoh, Brian Tyree Henry, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, and Ana de Armas also being recognized for their work.

In short, plenty of surprises, but a lot of recognition for some great films from 2022. Check out the full nominations list below — the 95th annual Academy Awards, with Jimmy Kimmel as host, will be handed out on Sunday, March 12th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
