The National Board of Review gave its stamp of approval to Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Wednesday, bestowing the American epic with four awards including Best Film, Best Director for Scorsese, Best Actress for Lily Gladstone, and Best Cinematography for Rodrigo Prieto (who was also cited for his work on “Barbie”).

“‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is a stunning masterpiece from one of our greatest filmmakers, Martin Scorsese. The NBR is proud to award this complex, important, and deeply resonant epic as our Best Film and Scorsese as our Best Director,” said NBR President Annie Schulhof.

What is the National Board of Review? The group helpfully provided its own origin story in a press release announcing this year’s crop of winners. “Established in 1909, the NBR recognizes excellence in filmmaking. This year, 245 films were viewed by a select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals, academics, and students, many of which were followed by in-depth discussions with directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz and Carr CPA.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon” wasn’t the only Oscars hopeful to find success with NBR voters. “The Holdovers” won three awards: Best Actor for Paul Giamatti, Best Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph (her latest precursor citation after winning at the New York Film Critics Circle last week), and Best Original Screenplay. “The Holdovers” was also listed among the NBR best films.

Another popular movie for the group was “Poor Things,” which won Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Yorgos Lanthimos comedy with Emma Stone in the lead role also landed on the NBR list of best films.

In addition to the competitive awards, NBR also gave out an Icon Award to Bradley Cooper for “Maestro.” Cooper co-wrote, directed, and produced the Leonard Bernstein film and also plays the lead role.

“We are also thrilled to honor Bradley Cooper with the NBR Icon Award – an equally impressive actor, writer, producer, and director, who brings his passion, artistry, and dedication to everything he does, including his latest beautifully sublime film, ‘Maestro,’” Schulhof said in a statement.

Other notable winners included Celine Song (“Past Lives”) for Best Directorial Debut and “The Iron Claw” for Best Ensemble. Both A24 movies wound up on the NBR best films list as well.

Last year, NBR gave “Top Gun: Maverick” its Best Film honors, with Steven Spielberg (Best Director for “The Fabelmans”), Colin Farrell (Best Actor for “The Banshees of Inishirin”), Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Brendan Gleeson (Best Supporting Actor for “The Banshees of Inishirin”), and Janelle Monae (Best Supporting Actress for “Glass Onion”) winning the top awards. Of that group, only Yeoh won a corresponding award at the Oscars. (Spielberg, Farrell, and Gleeson were all nominees.)
