On Wednesday, April 5, MTV announced the nominees for the 2023 MTV Movie and TV Awards honoring the best work on the big and small screens as voted on by fans online. Starting immediately, audiences can vote for their favorites across all gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through Monday, April 17 at 6pm ET. The show will air on May 7 live from Barker Hangar in Los Angeles starting at 8pm ET/PT.

The year’s most nominated film is “Top Gun: Maverick” with six bids including Best Movie and Best Performance in a Movie (Tom Cruise). Cruise is a longtime MTV favorite with previous wins for Best Male Performance for “Jerry Maguire” in 1997 and “Mission: Impossible II” in 2000, back when performance categories were still gendered. He also won the honorary MTV Generation Award in 2005. But these are his first nominations in any category since “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” 11 years ago.

More from GoldDerby

Tied as the most nominated TV show, also with six nominations, are a pair of sci-fi/horror hits: “Stranger Things” and “The Last of Us.” Both are up for Best Show. “Stranger Things” picked up an additional nom for Sadie Sink for Best Performance in a Show, while “The Last of Us” star Pedro Pascal is up for Best Hero. “The Last of Us” competes at these awards for the very first time, but “Stranger Things” has been an MTV fan favorite, winning Best Show in 2017 and 2018. Does that make it the front-runner to win again?
