2023 Emmy Nominations: Best Comedy Supporting Actress

After pulling off a surprise Emmy victory last year, Sheryl Lee Ralph of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” has a strong chance of triumphing in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category again. However, she faces serious challenges from new and returning nominees alike, including current Gold Derby frontrunner Ayo Edebiri (FX’s “The Bear”). The other four 2022 contenders who are in the hunt again this year are Alex Borstein (Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”), and “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+) duo Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham. Borstein and Waddingham are also past champions, with the former having taken the 2018 and 2019 prizes and the latter having prevailed in 2021.

Edebiri is one of two Emmy first-timers in the group, along with Jessica Williams (Apple TV+’s “Shrinking”). They and the “Abbott Elementary” pair constitute the first quartet of Black actresses to ever directly face off in a comedy category.
