Emmy Nominations 2023: ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘The Last of Us’ Lead

Succession, The Last of Us, and Ted Lasso all picked up a trove of nominees for the 75th Emmy Awards, which were announced Wednesday, July 12.

As expected, Succession led all nominees with 27 after its blockbuster final season. The show is up for Outstanding Drama Series; a bunch of writing, directing, and other technical categories; and stars Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, Alexander Skarsgård, and J. Smith-Cameron all earned lead or supporting actor nominations (James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, Ham Abbass, Cherry Jones, and Harriet Walter all picked up guest actor nominations, too).

While Succession will certainly go into the night as the heavy favorite, it will face stiff competition. For Outstanding Drama series, it will compete against The Last of Us, The White Lotus (which is no longer part of the Limited Series category), Better Call Saul, The Crown, Yellowjackets, House of the Dragon, and Andor.

Both The Last of Us and The White Lotus came in close behind Succession in total nominations, picking up 24 and 23, respectively. The Last of Us stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal were both nominated, as were many of the show’s guest performers, including Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, who turned in memorable performances in the show’s celebrated third episode.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Coolidge will look to win her second Emmy for The White Lotus, and the show also helped Michael Imperioli garner his first Emmy nod since the heyday of The Sopranos. He’s up for the same category he won in 2004, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, though he’ll have to compete against his co-stars F. Murray Abraham, Theo James, and Will Sharpe (in fact, that whole category only features actors from The White Lotus and Succession).

If there’s one dark horse to upset Succession, or even The White Lotus and The Last of Us, it might be Better Call Saul. The show received seven nominations for the second half of its sixth and final season, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods to stars Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn. Better Call Saul has been a consistent Emmy nominee over the course of its run, racking up 48 Creative and Primetime Emmy nominations (before this year). But remarkably, the show has only won two prizes — and both were Creative Arts Emmys for promotional material (which aren’t even included on the official Emmy website).

Over in the world of comedy, Ted Lasso led all nominees with 21 and will aim to score its third straight Outstanding Comedy Series victory for what’s largely believed to be its final season. The show has dominated the comedy category the past few years, and previous winners Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, and Hannah Waddingham are all nominated again this year. That said, reviews for Ted Lasso’s third season were rather lackluster, potentially leaving the door open for its Outstanding Comedy Series competitors: Abbott Elementary, Barry, The Bear, Jury Duty, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, and Wednesday.

Abbott Elementary earned eight nominations after taking home its first Emmy honors last year, including memorable acting and writing wins, respectively, for Sheryl Lee Ralph and creator-star Quinta Brunson (both are nominated again this year). Both Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are former Emmy darlings that have largely been shut out in recent years but could garner voter attention for their final seasons. But popular newcomers like The Bear (13 nominations) and Wednesday (12 nominations) will likely draw plenty of attention as well.

With The White Lotus now securely in the Drama category, the Limited or Anthology Series or Movie categories will likely be wide open this year. Beef and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story led all nominees in that category with 13 each, including noms for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, alongside Daisy Jones & the Six, Fleishman Is in Trouble, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The 75th Emmy Awards are currently scheduled to take place Monday, Sept. 18. However, the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike — and the looming threat of a Screen Actors Guild strike — could delay or hamper the proceedings. As The New York Times previously reported, if the WGA strike is not over by August, there will not be enough time to prep for a September show, meaning it could be pushed to January. (The Daytime Emmys, originally scheduled for June, were already delayed.)
