2023 Creative Arts Emmy Awards: ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Dominates, RuPaul Makes History, Carol Burnett Gets Emotional

Night two of the Creative Arts Emmys got underway at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Night one saw “The Last of Us” dominate the night with eight wins. “The White Lotus” and “The Bear” won four apiece, with “Beef” going home with three.

The evening focused on competition, unscripted and documentary programs. Hulu’s “Welcome to Wrexham” dominated the evening with five wins. “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” took home four Emmys.

Stephanie Filo made history as the first editor to be nominated in a single year for three different shows (“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “History of the World Part II”) and the first Black female editor to be nominated three times in a single year. She won the Emmy for picture editing for variety programming for HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” alongside fellow editors Malinda Zehner Guerra and Taylor Joy Mason.

Speaking backstage about working with Robin Thede and on a show with a predominantly female cast and crew, Filo said, “It’s great to have somebody in your corner pushing for you to be the best you possibly can.” She continued, “We all work together and collaborate and make something better than any one person. It’s a very unique experience.”

Also making history was actress Keke Palmer who won an Emmy for outstanding host for a game show for “Password.” Palmer was the first Black woman to win in the category. Speaking about her win, Palmer said, “To be acknowledged at different levels is just awesome.” She continued she had wanted to broaden her career aside from acting and performing. Jimmy Fallon had been an inspiration, and there was nothing greater for her than bringing people together. Palmer said, “I looked to him, and what he’s been able to do and just bring people together in a wholesome yet cool, fun way.”

“Still: A Michael J Fox Movie” producer Davis Guggenheim dedicated the documentary’s win to the actor. The emotional producer said, “what makes Michael so wonderful is who he is and how he lives. He always finds humor, is always seeking wisdom and refusing to live with a label and showing us that there are gifts to be found, especially when life takes.”

“The 1619 Project” won for documentary or non-fiction series. The win marked Onyx Collective’s first Emmy win in its first year of eligibility.

Elsewhere, “RuPaul’s Drag Race’s” star and producer RuPaul continued his winning streak for reality or competition program host -this was his eighth consecutive win. RuPaul had words of advice. “I want to tell all these kids out here in the business, remember who you are. Do not give up. Stick with it, kiddo, and remember who you are.”

Carol Burnett won the last award of the evening. Too emotional to speak, she told the audience to “drive home safely.”
