French Open 2022: Players, Predictions

This year’s French Open finals brings an especially exciting underdog story: 23-year-old Casper Ruud is facing off against 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the highly-anticipated men’s singles final. After eliminating Marin Čilić, Ruud became the first Norwegian player to reach a Grand Slam singles final. Rudd entered the competition as the eighth seed and had previously never made it past the fourth round of a major tournament.

But Ruud faces a Goliathan challenge in Nadal, who holds the record for the most French Open wins (13) and the most clay titles (62). However, Nadal’s advance to the finals is bittersweet, as his previous opponent Alexander Zverev was forced to withdraw with an ankle injury.

In the women’s singles final, top-seeded Iga Swiatek will take on Coco Gauff. Should Swiatek win, she’ll have a 35-match winning streak, tying with Venus Williams’ 2000 record for the longest winning streak of the century. But a win is far from guaranteed for Swiatek, as Gauff has been on a tear at this year’s French Grand Slam tournament.
