How it works is different chemicals create different hues when added to the fire. Lithium salt or strontium nitrate creates red flames, calcium chloride makes orange, sodium chloride makes yellow, boric acid, borax and copper sulfate turn green, potassium chloride becomes violet and alcohol turns the flames blue.
Although the effect can be achieved on with some experimenting on your own, it can be tedious, costly and well, you’d literally be playing with fire. Leave the pyrotechnics up to the professionals!
