These innovative zoo cameras monitor animals’ health from afar

Animals typically have to be sedated for checkups, but new camera software allows zookeepers to check their health from afar.

The Adelaide Zoo in Adelaide, South Australia, installed digital monitors that mostly remove the need for anesthetics.

The sophisticated cameras zoom in close enough for staff to record important health information they couldn’t otherwise gather without getting close to potentially dangerous animals.

Senior veterinarian Ian Smith explained that the new technology is crucial to ensuring safety for all parties.

“When you’re dealing with lions, there [are] a lot of health risks for the personnel involved,” he said.

This innovation, which provides a better experience for both the animals and people involved in the process, is a crucial step in wildlife conservation efforts.
