2001 Michael Schumacher Ferrari racecar could fetch $4 million

One of the most important racecars of this century, the Ferrari F2001 that Michael Schumacher piloted to the 2001 Formula One Drivers and Constructors titles, will be up for sale Nov. 16 at a Sotheby's event in New York.

The racecar wears chassis No. 211 and was used in three races that year. Schumacher won two of them, the Monaco and Hungarian Grands Prix. It was curated by Sotheby's automotive auction partner, RM, and they forecast the famous car could fetch $4 million or more. Potential bidders got their most recent look at the car at a Sotheby's event in Hong Kong.

"This very car secured Ferrari their 11th of a record 15 Formula One Constructors championships and Michael Schumacher his fourth of an unmatched seven Drivers Championships, placing it among the best of the best in the world of motorsport," Ken Ahn, president of RM Sotheby's, said in a statement.

The auctioneers note that the F2001 is still in condition for vintage racing events and can be stored by Ferrari in Maranello. Ferrari also would arrange the racecar's transportation to events around the world.
