2 Women Survive After Small Plane Crashes Into Tree Behind Georgia Neighborhood

Both victims miraculously only suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said

A small plane crashed into a wooded area in Georgia late Tuesday, police said. Two passengers escaped with non-life-threatening injuries

Two women survived after their small plane crashed into a tree in a wooded area behind a Georgia neighborhood late Tuesday night, police said.

The Clayton County Police Department said in a news release shared on Facebook that officers were dispatched around 11:55 p.m., local time, to respond to a plane in distress.

“Officers were advised that the private plane was running out of gas,” police added. “After over an hour search, officers located the private plane in the 300 block of Tara Beech Lane, Hampton, GA.”

The two victims managed to escape the plane and were found on the forest floor, according to the department.

Both victims were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Clayton County Police Department. Their identities have not been released at this time.

Police told PEOPLE that there are no additional updates at this time and that "the investigation has been turned over to the FAA."

Neighbor Donnell Edwards described hearing “a large boom,” per ABC affiliate WSBTV-TV, but didn’t see the plane crash. He then came out of his home and saw first responders at the scene.

Authorities were still working to remove the plane and have asked people to avoid the area, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The cause of the crash is also under investigation by the NTSB, Atlanta News First reported.
