While Baby Reindeer still sits at the number one spot of Netflix’s top 10 most watched shows list, there is a new gritty true-crime drama that I, a longtime news and entertainment writer, personally think 1.) deserves to be on your to-watch list and 2.) will have you glued to your seat from beginning to end.

The Asunta Case, which is currently occupying the second slot on the list, is a newly released Spanish-language drama that follows parents Roasario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, who report their adopted daughter, Asunta, as missing. But the case takes a shocking turn that causes the concerned parents to become the prime suspects.

In case you didn’t know, The Asunta Case is actually inspired by the real-life case of Asunta Fong Yang, a 12-year-old Chinese-born girl who was reported missing by her Spanish adoptive parents in 2013. She was later found dead on the side of a countryside road and her parents were charged with her murder.

Per Today, the family was considered to be upper-middle class. Asunta’s adoptive mother, Rosario Porto, was a lawyer from Santiago while her adoptive father, Alfonso Basterra, was a freelance journalist from Basque (a small island in Spain).

According to The Guardian, witnesses close to the family described Porto and Basterra as model parents—but I won’t spoil what happened next.

The Asunta Case stars Tristán Ulloa as Alfonso Basterra, Candela Peña as Rosario Porto, Iris Wu as Asunta Fong Yang Basterra Porto and Javier Gutierrez as Judge Malvar.
