2-Year-Old Virginia Girl Dead After Accidentally Shooting Herself: Police

A 2-year-old girl in Hampton, Virginia died after accidentally shooting herself on Dec. 12.

A 2-year-old girl in Hampton, Va., died after accidentally shooting herself on Tuesday afternoon.

At about 1:05 p.m., the city's police department received a call reporting the shooting at the 500 Block of Marcella Road, according to a Tuesday press release from police.

After officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a single gunshot wound, per the release.

She was then transported to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Following a preliminary investigation, authorities learned that the 2-year-old was inside a residence when she discovered a loaded firearm and accidentally shot herself with it, according to the release.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there are no further updates in the investigation, police told PEOPLE in a statement.

No other information was provided, but police are currently investigating the girl's death.
