2 Kentucky restaurants named among South's most beloved burger joints

Move over, barbecue and fried chicken. Southern-style burgers are getting a moment in the spotlight.

Southern Living released a list last week of the “South’s Most Beloved Burger Joints.” The round-up of 20 classic spots shouts out two Kentucky restaurants, including Burger Boy Diner in Louisville and Laha’s Red Castle in Hodgenville.

“These are the places that have been around since our parents and grandparents were kids,” reads the Southern Living story. “The menus are often short and sweet, but one thing you can always count on at a legendary burger joint is a consistently great meal.”

A trip to Burger Boy Diner, 1450 S. Brook St., is a “surefire way to fill your belly and your spirit,” according to Southern Living. The 24/7 restaurant in Old Louisville is known for the Burger Boy Combo, which comes with seasoned fries and a drink and costs $14.

Prices are hard to beat at Laha’s Red Castle, which opened in 1936 at 21 Lincoln Square in Hodgenville. A hamburger there costs $2.50 and goes up to $2.75 if you want cheese.

“With only eight counter seats, plus a few more outside, you may find it hard to get into this teeny tiny burger joint during the lunch rush. But it’s more than worth any wait,” the Southern Living editors wrote about Laha’s Red Castle.
