At least two men were killed and three others were injured in a shooting in a Washington, D.C. neighborhood, according to authorities.

Washington, D.C. Acting Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said in a press conference that on Wednesday night at around 9.50 p.m. officers had responded to the sounds of gunshots near the intersection of 14th Street and Saratoga Avenue, Northeast in the Brentwood area.

She said when the officers arrived on the scene, they immediately found three people with gunshot wounds. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Smith said two more men “suffering from gunshot wounds” — which a preliminary investigation determined was likely from the same shooting incident — brought themselves to a nearby hospital. One of them was listed in critical condition, while the other had non-life-threatening injuries.

The acting police chief also addressed a query from a reporter about increased crime in the area.

“[You’re] having these crew on crew senseless arguments with firearms being introduced when folks have disputes as opposed to being able to resolve them the way we would typically resolve a dispute,” she said. "What I will say is that our officers were present in this area, as they always are on an ongoing basis."
