‘1917’ and ‘Uncut Gems’ Continue to Shine at Box Office on Golden Globe Weekend
Universal/DreamWorks’ “1917” and A24’s “Uncut Gems” are continuing their strong runs this Golden Globes weekend, giving their respective studios hope that their nominated films will get a boost from moviegoers looking to get caught up on the contenders.
The World War I film grossed $591,000 from 11 screens for a $53,688 average, giving it a two-weekends total of $2.28 million. It will open wide on Friday alongside Warner Bros.’ “Just Mercy,” which is also taking the path of limited Christmas Day release and early January wide expansion. The legal drama grossed $79,862 from four screens for a per screen average of $19,966 and bringing its total to $404,000.

One film that doesn’t need Golden Globe nominations to succeed at the box office is A24’s “Uncut Gems,” which is continuing a strong run in wide release with $7.6 million grossed this weekend from 2,686 screens and a current total of $36.8 million. The critically acclaimed crime thriller has polarized audiences, who have given it a verified 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That hasn’t stopped it from holding well at the box office despite getting snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Among the holdovers that are contending at the Globes tonight, Fox Searchlight’s “Jojo Rabbit” has hit $21.5 million after grossing $355,000 from 118 theaters in its 12th weekend. Foreign language contender “Pain and Glory” is close to $4 million after grossing $67,436 in its 14th weekend, while NEON’s “Parasite,” which is contending in the director, screenplay and foreign language categories, has $23.9 million after 14 weekends with $888,122 grossed this weekend.
