A 19-year-old girl has died after she and her twin sister were stabbed in a Brooklyn, New York bodega in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. local time in front of 77 4th Avenue in the Park Slope neighborhood, the NYPD stated in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Samyia Spain died after suffering a stab wound to the chest, police confirmed. They said a second 19-year-old female was in a "stable condition" after suffering a stab wound in the arm. The attack happened at the Slope Natural Plus Deli & Grill.

NBC News, WABC-TV and CBS News confirmed the victims were twins.

"EMS responded and transported the aided females to New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital where one female victim was pronounced deceased, and the second female victim was listed in stable condition," police added in a statement to PEOPLE. "There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing at this time."

A witness, who did not want to be named, told NBC New York that the incident occurred after a man attempted to talk to the women but they rejected him.

"He walked down the block angry. And then two or three minutes later he comes up and starts banging and kicking on the glass door trying to get in," the witness recalled, per the outlet.

The staff at the deli then locked the door. "The second they opened the door, he ran back into the door and started attacking them,” the witness added.

"They're not sober. They get rejected and they just escalate it ten-fold. We (were) all having a good night before this," a witness told WABC-TV, stating the victims had been at a party.

"We just had left and we went to the store to get food. We all were getting sandwiches, beef patties just to eat, we're hungry, we want to go home and this happens," they continued.

Mohammed Alba, a worker at the deli, told CBS News the victims had been customers for years.

"They're very nice. I know their father, too. They come here all the time, customers for maybe over, I would say, over 10 years I know them," Alba said. "Take somebody else's life, a young lady, 19 years old, a beautiful girl."
