You can’t win ’em all. With so many candidates to choose from every Grammy season, there are inevitably major contenders left out of the running in favor of artists, songs and albums we didn’t see coming. With that in mind, scroll down to see some of the major contenders who didn’t make the cut in the big four general field categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

Foo Fighters are missing entirely from the general field, though they were recognized in the rock field. Their album “But Here We Are” was snubbed for Album of the Year, and their single “Rescued” missed the cut for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Also absent from the general field is Doja Cat‘s “Paint the Town Red.” She missed out on Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and the Record snub is especially surprising since she was nominated for that award for the last three years in a row and “Paint the Town Red” has become one of her biggest hits. The song did nevertheless get a nom in the pop race.

There were a few major artists absent from the Best New Artist contest. Despite sweeping the CMA Awards on November 8, Lainey Wilson was nowhere to be found in this year’s lineup for the year’s strongest breakthrough acts, though she did receive recognition in the country categories. Crossover Latin artist Peso Pluma was also left off the Best New Artist list even though he has put regional Mexican music on the mainstream pop charts with a hit album and myriad hit singles.
