Jane the Virgin might consider a title change in Season 3 — because the “virgin” part won’t be true for much longer!

When the CW romantic dramedy returns Monday night, it’ll pick up right where it left off, with Jane (Gina Rodriguez) reeling after her new husband, Michael (Brett Dier), was shot. Whether he lives or dies remains to be seen, but whatever the outcome, it’s going to be a tough time for our plucky heroine.

This season is really about growing up as an overall theme,” creator Jennie Snyder Urman tells Yahoo TV. “There are a lot of big milestones that happen this year and a lot of youthful innocence shed.”

Big changes are in store for Jane and her family. Here’s what to expect from Season 3:

1. Michael’s fate will be revealed by the end of the premiere

Unlike the Season 1 finale cliffhanger, when baby Mateo was kidnapped, Michael’s shooting won’t be resolved right away. “People will know at the end if he lives or dies, but it’s a pretty harrowing journey,” Urman teases.

Many fans had guessed Michael might die, and Urman acknowledges that his shooting had been planned from the very beginning. “We knew it was going to happen. We knew it was going to be pretty devastating after this incredibly joyful wedding,” she says. “We really planned and thought through what it will do to the show, to the narrative, to the characters, and how it will propel us forward in the long-term arc.”

2. Jane won’t be a virgin soon

“She will lose her virginity this year,” Urman declares. And like Michael’s shooting, Jane losing her virginity this season was always in the cards.

“The exact circumstances under which it will happen, and what will make it significant and funny and heartfelt and all of those things, have evolved as we’ve worked through the season,” Urman says. “Also, we knew it wouldn’t be at the beginning of a season or as a season finale, that it would always be part of her season, because I don’t feel like our show is essentially a show about her virginity.”

3. Xiomara will have to face the prospect of motherhood… again

In the Season 3 finale, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) learned she was pregnant. But the baby’s father could be her true love and ex, Rogelio (Jaime Camil), or Rogelio’s nemesis, Esteban (Keller Wortham). Further complicating the matter is that Xo doesn’t want to have another kid — which is why she and Rogelio broke up in the first place!

“Xo still has a great, big juicy arc this year. Obviously the first question is will she have this baby, that she has gone on record as saying she doesn’t want,” Urman notes. “And subsequent to that, you’re going to see her making some big decisions.”

There are big changes coming up for Xo, Urman says, one of which is that she might finally get her big break — she lands an audition on The Voice!

4. Rogelio gets some devastating news

Yeah, it’s pretty heart-breaking for the social media-mad actor: Turns out he’s not as famous in the United States as he thought. Of course, he decides not to stop until he’s conquered the American celebrity market.

“Rogelio is going to be bringing one of his beloved telenovelas, ‘The Passions of Santos’ — he decides he wants to remake that for the American audience,” Urman says. “He runs into a little trouble, because the Americanized version loses some of what he loves about ‘Santos,’ namely that he’s starring in it.”

A “Passions of Santos” without Rogelio as the star? Sacrilege!

The storyline is a bit of a wink-wink, meta-heavy commentary on Jane the Virgin itself. Urman notes, “We want to talk about what it means to cross over and what it’s significant about that.”

5. Petra remains paralyzed… but perhaps not for long

Who would’ve ever thought we’d say this, but: Poor Petra (Yael Grobglas)! Urman laughs. “Yes, poor Petra! She’s Petra-fied!”

In the Season 2 finale, Petra’s seemingly meek twin sister, Anezka, injected her with something that induced a “locked in” condition. She’s aware of what’s happening around her, but she can’t speak or move. But she may not be “locked in” for very long.

“Anezka is going to have to inject her with a paralytic a certain amount of hours and there’s a lot of jeopardy about whether she will make it in the first episode or whether Petra will wake up,” Urman explains.

Meanwhile, Anezka has the dirt she needs to blackmail Rafael (Justin Baldoni). “She wants a big chunk of money. She wants to get her mom a super lawyer and go back to the Czech Republic and live like a queen.”

6. Sin Rostro goes to therapy

Last we saw Sin Rostro aka Rose (Bridget Regan), she shot Michael and whisked Luisa (Yara Martinez) off to parts unknown.

“We know that this is one of the greatest love stories ever told,” Urman says with a laugh. “The lengths to which Rose will go to have a happily ever after with Luisa is going to be something we’re going to be delving into.”

One of those lengths is couples therapy! Yes, Sin Rostro is going to try opening up.

“We’re going to see Rose and Luisa attempt therapy to see if they can get past their issues,” Urman explains. “Ultimately Luisa is going to have to make a choice about whether she wants to spend a life on the run with Rose or return to the family.”

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
