Austin Butler is set to take on The King of Rock & Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which hits theaters on June 24, 2022.

The film is set to explore the life and music of Elvis “through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks),” according to the film’s description. “The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.”

Butler, however, is hardly the first star to portray The King in TV and film. Back in 1979, Kurt Russell transformed into Presley for a biopic directed by John Carpenter. The movie aired two years after Presley’s untimely death in 1977 at age 42. Two years after Russell’s career-defining performance, in 1981, Don Johnson portrayed the hip-swaying icon in the made-for-television drama musical film, Elvis and the Beauty Queen.

Five years before Butler put on his thick sideburns and sparkling white jumpsuit, Drake Mulligan portrayed The King in the TV series, Sun Records, that aired on CMT in 2017. The show, despite its critical acclaim, only lasted one season.
