Skincare products are designed to make your skin feel and look its best, but sometimes temperature can add an extra sense of relief and relaxation, especially when it comes to facial areas. A skincare fridge allows you to keep beauty products like facial moisturizers, face masks, and tools at a cool temperature so they feel even more amazing when applied to your face. And some even have heating capabilities — but we’ll get to that!

“Cold temperatures can help preserve products like antioxidants longer, as can proper packaging, and often dark packaging that does not let light in,” NYU Langone Dermatological Surgeon Mary L. Stevenson, MD tells PEOPLE. Though Dr. Stevenson doesn’t personally use a skincare fridge, she’s familiar with these products, and says, “Cold creams and products often can be soothing to the skin and gently massaging under the eyes with a cold roller or cold cream can help with puffiness under the eyes.”

After speaking to several experts and researching the market, we’ve found the best skincare fridges available based on size, function, temperature settings, and storage capacity.

Read on for PEOPLE's picks for the best skincare fridges, as well as what to look for when buying.

Best Overall: Cooluli Infinity Mini Fridge

$80 at Amazon.com

$80 at Wayfair.com

Who It's Good For

  • Thanks to its spacious interior and multiple shelves, this is the ideal fridge for those who want to keep a variety of beauty products chilled and ready to use.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This fridge may not be ideal for anyone who doesn't want any condensation in the fridge.

“The Cooluli Mini Fridge is my go-to skin fridge,” esthetician and founder of SB Skin Shamara Bondaroff tells PEOPLE. Bondaroff is known for performing microcurrent facials and uses this beauty fridge to store tools and products. “The design is simple and chic, and it looks great in my microcurrent studio.” With multiple removable shelves and a spacious interior, it can function to fit many different skincare products, and you can organize it any way you like — take note from the Home Edit team’s restocking skills in this Instagram post.

“It’s also nicely sized — it features three shelves and holds all of my products, but it’s still compact enough to fit on a counter,” Bondaroff says. “My favorite feature about this fridge is that it has a wide temperature range so you can really dial in how cold you prefer your products.” Some users did critique mild condensation toward the back of the unit, but temperature naturally fluctuates, so it’s not unreasonable that this would be the case. With warming and cooling capabilities, this beauty fridge is versatile for many types of products and tools, and it won’t soon break — forged by aluminum, plastic, and tempered glass. For good measure, there’s also a spring lock on the door handle for extra security in case you bring this fridge on the go since the handle makes it quite portable.

Capacity: 10 liters | Colors: 5 | Dimensions: 10 x 11.4 x 13.4 inches | Storage: Two shelves, door bin

Best Budget: Crownful Mini Fridge

$45 at Amazon.com

$50 at Walmart.com

Who It's Good For

  • This fridge is great for anyone who wants a reliable skincare fridge that's portable and energy-efficient.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This may not be the right fridge for anyone who wants a fancier model that has smart tech, more storage or shelving, and locks.

With three sections to store skincare and beauty tools, this whimsical little fridge is a fun addition to any beauty space. While it may not have fancy technology, this Crownful skincare fridge is efficient in its simplicity. With six bright colors like a retro mint green, calming sky blue, and Barbiecore pink, this fridge will fit into any aesthetic and preserve your products for longer than they would last sitting in the back of your dresser drawer.

Though minimalistic with a single shelf, this fridge is both energy-efficient and 100 percent freon-free, meaning no questionable gas near all your beauty essentials (we love an unproblematic fridge!). It has cooling and warming capabilities, though we caution against using the warming feature unless you’re sure the products you’re storing are intended to be stored and used hot. The best part is its portability — with an AC power cord, car charger, and handle, you can bring this fridge with you to cool your skincare supply on the go.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 6 | Dimensions: 5.32 x 5.52 x 7.88 inches | Storage: One shelf, door bin

Best Compact: Personal Chiller Portable Mini Fridge

$35 at Amazon.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great choice for those in dorms or small apartments who want to keep their skincare on the rocks.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This may not be ideal for those who need more space for their products than a 4-liter fridge can allow.

Tight spaces like dorm rooms or small apartments don’t offer much counter space, which is why it's important to go for something small like the Personal Chiller skincare fridge for all of your beauty needs. This baby pink shelf clocks in at just under 5 and a half inches wide on the inside and has one removable shelf that can separate the inner compartment into sections, which can hold the equivalent of six soda cans: two on top and four on the bottom. Stock up with your favorite eye serums and beauty tools or add your favorite drink inside — the choice is yours (so long as the products are on the smaller side). And best of all, it’s freon-free!

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 1 | Dimensions: 9.6 x 10.7 x 7 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best Smart: Lvara Smart Mini Skincare Fridge

$170 at Amazon.com

See at Lvara.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is the ideal pick for someone who wants to control individual features like temperature, shelf-life reminders, and frost prevention.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This may not be the right fridge for someone looking for a more portable option.

This beauty fridge has all the components of smart tech with a contemporary design. You can use an app on your phone to control the temperature, noise level, and modes, as well as be reminded when certain products expire. With nine liters of space, this is a roomy fridge with plenty of storage for tall, medium, and smaller products, such as lip scrubs, and even has a sleeve attached to the lid to store sheet masks.

You can either use the standard mode, the smart mode (which lets you schedule sleep times and adjust the noise level during that period), or night mode (a lower decibel noise level). Due to the size, this fridge isn’t portable but would fit seamlessly on a makeup desk or vanity. And with three stunning colors to choose from — emerald green, blush pink, and a muted white, it’ll be a statement piece wherever it lives in your home.

Capacity: 9 liters | Colors: 3 | Dimensions: 7.6 x 15.2 x 8.9 inches | Storage: Two vertical sections

Best for Vanity: Frigidaire Portable Retro Mini Fridge

$28 at Amazon.com

$28 at Target.com

Who It's Good For

  • This mini fridge is ideal for anyone who loves a vintage design and needs a compact appliance to hold their beauty supplies.

Who It's Not Good For

  • Since this is a simple skincare fridge, this may not be the best pick for those who want more features.

For lovers of all things retro, this Frigidaire mini beauty fridge serves major throwback vibes. While simple in design — one shelf, two sections for storage — this fridge is super compact, making it ideal for placement on a vanity or even bathroom counter so it’s close by when you’re applying skincare and makeup. It comes in five unique colors that all tie into the vintage theme and maintain a steady temperature with a thermoelectric cooling system. There’s also a lock on the door to keep your items secure so they don’t fall out, should you take this fridge on a trip — the handle and included adapters make it portable.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 5 | Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 7 inches | Storage: One shelf

Best Portable: Caynel Mini Fridge Cooler and Warmer 4-liter

$50 at Amazon.com

See at Caynel.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great pick for anyone who likes to chill and warm their products.

Who It's Not Good For

  • Since it's not super deep, this may not be the best option for anyone who needs a larger fridge to store a bunch of products.

Built for the road or wherever you go, this compact fridge is ideal for traveling with your beauty essentials. It has a handle for carrying on top and comes with plugs for standard outlets and car chargers so you can use it on the go. The thermoelectric system allows for cooling temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees below the temperature of the room it’s stored in, and warming temps of 122 to 144 degrees. You can change settings by simply flipping a switch, and the insulated interior can hold the temperature even after the fridge is unplugged. This fridge is highly energy efficient, freon-free, and super quiet. It's not super deep, so this may not be the best choice for anyone who needs to store a lot of products at once.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 7 | Dimensions: 7.2 x 9.95 x 10.83 inches | Storage: One shelf, door bin

Best Double-Door: Homcom Portable Skincare Fridge

$200 at Amazon.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great pick for those who want a mini fridge with the most shelf space.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This mini fridge might be too large for someone who has less storage space available.

If you’re all about glamor when it comes to your beauty routine, then you’ll love the grandeur of the Homcom Portable Skincare Fridge. This rounded-edged mini refrigerator opens up in the center to reveal double doors stocked with shelving with space for your favorite lip products and a sectioned-off interior that can house everything from nail polish to serums and eye creams.

We appreciate the 12 liters of space that you get in this fridge, allowing you to store not only your favorite skincare products but also your favorite chilled tools, like gua shas and jade rollers. Though you don’t necessarily need to keep your favorite lipstick at a cool temperature, it’s nice to know that you have the organizational space for your go-to shades. Keep in mind that if you don't have ample free space, this might not be the right fridge for you. Choose from three electronic modes (constant temperature, night mute, and energy-saving) and watch as the controlled temperature reflects on the digital display in front of this high-tech fridge.

Capacity: 12 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 10.75 x 10.75 x 17.5 inches | Storage: In-door shelving, one bin, organizational compartments

Best Retro: Koolatron Retro Mini Portable Fridge

$41 at Amazon.com

$44 at Walmart.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great pick for anyone who wants a small but stylish portable mini fridge.

Who It's Not Good For

  • Because it can only accommodate up to 4 liters of products, this might not be the best pick for those who want to store a lot of items.

They say that everything old is new again, and that couldn’t be truer for this vintage-inspired mini fridge that comes in pastel pink, aqua blue, and classic black shades. Enthusiasts of styles past will love this appliance for its antique-looking chrome features and kitschy colors, all of which call back the aesthetics of the ‘70s with a bit of 2020s flair.

This mini style is short in stature but quite deep, allowing you to house several bottles and jars inside without cramping your style. Better yet, the shelf inside is removable so you can place larger items like hairspray inside. However, it’s definitely not the largest organizational fridge on our list, housing up to only 4 liters, which means you may want to opt for a larger model if you have more products that need refrigeration.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 3 | Dimensions: 6.8 x 7 x 10 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best with Heat Mode: AstroAI Mini Fridge

$47 at Amazon.com

$50 at Walmart.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great pick for anyone who needs a quiet, portable mini fridge.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This might not be the right choice for those who need to store large quantities of products.

Obviously, most beauty fridges are intended to cool products and tools, but this one has the capability to heat up to 150 degrees, meaning you can utilize the hot mode too. While there are many products that should not be heated, we have a few suggestions. You could use this feature to warm up damp wash clothes to steam your face prior to applying a face mask. And while you shouldn’t store oils or clay products when the fridge is cold because it can affect the consistency, the hot mode (used responsibly) can be a good way to warm up hair oils and clay masks, for instance. This fridge is quiet, portable, freon-free, and reasonably priced, so if you’re looking for a compact and versatile beauty fridge, this one’s your guy.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 6 | Dimensions: 9.45 x 6.9 x 10 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best with Whiteboard: Cooluli Vibe Mini Fridge

$100 at Amazon.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great fridge for those who need a lot of storage space as it holds 15 liters.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This mini fridge may not be ideal for someone who lacks available space as it's one of the larger models on our list.

One of the first things we do in the morning is apply our skincare, so why not leave yourself a little note the next time you go to polish off? Not only does this fridge have considerable storage (15 liters) and organization (two removable shelves and in-door baskets), but you can leave yourself little reminders to remind yourself of what’s important as you go to prep yourself for the day. Whether that be reminders, important notes, or daily words of affirmation, you’ll find yourself smiling as you see the note you or a loved one left you the night before. As this is one of the larger models on our list, this mini fridge might not be ideal if you have limited available space.

Capacity: 15 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 10.5 x 12.75  x 14.75 inches | Storage: 2 removable shelves, 2 container baskets

Best Storage: FaceTory Portable Beauty Fridge

$63 at Amazon.com

$95 at Facetory.com

Who It's Good For

  • This is a great pick for someone who wants to store tall products and large beauty tools.

Who It's Not Good For

  • Since it has only one removable shelf, this fridge isn't ideal for anyone who needs to store many small beauty products.

While this beauty fridge is still relatively small, it’s quite spacious for storage with 10 liters of space to work with. It comes with one shelf which you can place toward the top to store small jars of moisturizers and sheet masks while placing tall products beneath such as facial mists, serums, and face rollers. With a temperature ranging around 41 to 48 degrees (the lowest setting at 32 degrees), this fridge is ideal for storing beauty and skincare products to treat your face to a cool refresh.

Capacity: 10 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 9.64 x 11.41 x 13.38 inches | Storage: One removable shelf, door bin

Who It's Good For

  • This is ideal for anyone who wants a miniature version of a vintage-style fridge.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This fridge is not right for someone who needs a larger option with more shelves.

This compact, lightweight fridge is ideal to take on the go. It has a convenient carrying handle and weighs just under 4 pounds, so it’s extremely portable. The vintage style is fun, and the color is super cute, plus, it even includes stickers so you can add your own decorative touch. There's a small oval window in the front of the fridge as well as a stylish metal handle and hinges. It doesn't use freon, and it has a temperature range of 46 to 55 degrees for chilling and can heat up to 130 degrees. It only has one shelf, but if you’re not storing a ton of products, this little fridge may be just the right size.

Best for Organization: KOUDERA Portable Fridge

$80 at Amazon.com

Who It's Good For

  • This mini fridge is ideal for those who like having a window to view their skincare collection.

Who It's Not Good For

  • This fridge is a bit large and may not be suitable for someone with limited space.

This mini fridge from KOUDERA has 15 liters of storage — so there is lots of room to store all your skincare products. It has a removable shelf in the middle of the fridge and a basket in the door for taller items. It also has a tall window, so you can see which products you have and which you’re running low on. Since it weighs 10 pounds, it’s a bit heavy to tote around regularly, but it does include both an AC wall plug and a DC 12V adapter that will work in a vehicle. This versatile, freon-free skincare fridge also can cool your products to 32 degrees or warm them up to 150 degrees.

Capacity: 15 liters | Colors: 1 | Dimensions: 12.7 x 16.9 x 11.4 inches | Storage: One removable shelf, basket in door

How to Pick the Right Skincare Fridge

Temperature

The most important consideration of a skincare fridge is the temperature. “Cold temperatures can help preserve products like antioxidants longer, as can proper packaging, and often dark packaging that does not let light in,” NYU Langone dermatological surgeon Mary L. Stevenson, MD tells PEOPLE. A colder temperature can even improve the performance of your skincare products in the long run. “Controlling the temperature of your fridge also lends itself to easier product application and absorption as it not only preserves the formulation but keeps the texture of your product intact,” says Bondaroff. Smart fridges like our Lvara pick even allow you to control the temperature when you’re not home.

Size

You should consider the overall size of the skincare fridge, especially depth and height so you can determine which products will fit. For storing taller items like serums, cleansers, or beauty tools like a jade roller, you’ll want a taller beauty fridge or one with a removable shelf or two (like the Cooluli Mini Fridge) to give you more space. For short and wide items like tubs of moisturizer, flat sheet masks, or eye treatments, having a skincare fridge with more depth and multiple shelves will help you fit more products.

Function

The type of skincare fridge you buy should obviously take into account what you’re planning to store and how you want to use the fridge. If you use a lot of skincare products and tools, you should look for features that will aid the longevity and efficacy of each product (bearing in mind ingredients and consistency). Though Dr. Stevenson doesn’t personally use a skincare fridge, she’s familiar with these products, and says, “Cold creams and products often can be soothing to the skin and gently massaging under the eyes with a cold roller or cold cream can help with puffiness under the eyes.”

If you travel with your makeup, then a portable skincare fridge — like the Caynel Mini Fridge — will allow you to keep products fresh and nearby regardless of where you are. And for products that need warming, you can look for skincare fridges with heating capabilities — like the Astro AI Mini Fridge — just make sure to follow instructions closely to avoid heating products that are not intended to be used warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What products are best in a skincare fridge?

Per our expert, it’s less about the product type and more about the ingredients and consistency. “Zooming out a bit, if you tend to gravitate towards cleaner products formulated without preservatives, a skincare fridge is for you,” says Bondaroff. “Other products like vitamin C for example — that tend to oxidize when exposed to light, warm[th], and moisture — also sit well in skincare fridges. You should always consider the formula and the product’s consistency before storing it in the fridge (or not). Products that have lighter consistencies like water- and gel-based moisturizers or serums usually live happily in a fridge. Similarly, products with 'active' levels of skincare ingredients or botanicals do well in the fridge, too."

What products should you not keep in a skincare fridge?

Both experts agree that oils are a no-go. “Extremely thick creams, facial oils that have the potential to separate, and clay-based products are not best suited for a skincare fridge as it can alter the consistency of the product,” Bondaroff says. Dr. Stevenson echoes this sentiment, saying face oils should not be refrigerated.

Does chilling your beauty tools in a skincare fridge make them more effective?

Yes and no. “I love storing my beauty tools in the fridge,” Bondaroff shares. “I keep my gua sha, jade roller, and any other lymph-moving, de-puffing tools on my fridge shelves. Chilling your tools doesn’t necessarily make them any more or less effective; however, a colder temperature can aid in extra de-puffing and soothing.” It’s sort of a placebo effect, because cooler tools feel better on your face, which can give you a sense of refreshment no matter what’s happening at the cellular level. “I like to keep my tools in the fridge simply because it makes for the most relaxing experience,” she says.

Can you put moisturizer in a skincare fridge?

Yes, you can store moisturizers in the fridge. “I recommend keeping water-based or gel-based moisturizers in the fridge,” says Bondaroff. “Products that feature a jelly-like or watery consistency do well there as it helps to preserve texture, efficacy, and consistency. They also feel like an extra cooling and soothing treat after sitting in the fridge!”
