14-Year-Old in Rhode Island Charged with Murdering Another Teen

A 14-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting of another teenager last month.

The male suspect, whose identification has not been revealed due to his age, was arraigned in Rhode Island Family Court on Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Providence Police Department said, per ABC 6, NBC 10, and WPRI.

The 14-year-old was charged with the murder of 17-year-old Emil Rodriguez, who was shot in the head and killed on Feb. 1 in Providence, Rhode Island. The teenager was also charged with conspiracy and firearm charges, per the outlets.

On Feb. 1, police responded to Legion Memorial Drive where they found Rodriguez lying in the street near the entrance of Neutaconkanut Park, reported ABC 6. He was declared dead at the scene.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told NBC 10 at the time that police arrived at the scene after hearing shots fired while they were checking an alarm at a local business in the area.

"The fact that a 14-year-old was involved it's just sad to see," Perez added to NBC 10 Tuesday.

No arrests were made at the time of the shooting. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing, per ABC 6.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Providence Police Department for further comment.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by the victim’s mother, Evelyn Rodriguez, seeking donations for the family in the wake of her son's death.

“On February 1, my son, Emil, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. He was shot and killed, leaving our family lost and broken,” Evelyn wrote. “Emil had just turned 17. He was a friendly and outgoing boy, who was looking forward to graduating high school and pursuing a career as an ironworker.”

She continued, “Emil had won 2 back-to-back Washington Park Little League Championships, an 11u Regional Championship, and also a Minor League Championship. Emil also loved spending time with his baby sister and nephew, who loved him dearly.”

“Emil is missed greatly by so many family and friends. While our family grieves this devastating loss and attempts to put our lives back together, I have been unable to work and have fallen behind on rent and bills, fearing my children and I will lose our home and everything I worked hard for. During this difficult time, I am reaching out for help,” Evelyn explained.

She ended her note by sharing her gratefulness to those willing to donate.

According to authorities, per NBC 10, the arraigned 14-year-old had already been serving at the Rhode Island Training School for another crime.
