There is no one quite like Dwayne Johnson, who, after spending eight years as a professional wrestler for the WWE (where his nickname “The Rock” was born) transitioned to becoming one of today’s most bankable actors. Johnson has now become a blockbuster king, pulling in big dollars for films such as “Get Smart,” “Moana,” “Jumanji” and of course the expansive “Fast & Furious” franchise.

It was in 2004, after winning several championships, that the Rock made his first transition to the screen — well, aside from his television appearances on the WWE, where he garnered record-number views for the network. Some of his first credits include 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” 2002’s “The Scorpion King” and 2003’s “The Rundown.” And despite his belated foray into the acting space, Johnson has quickly cemented his space on the big screen, taking on commanding and powerful roles that it seems only someone with his experience could do.

Nowadays, one of his most famous roles is “Fast and Furious’s” Luke Hobbs, a former Secret Service agent tasked with hunting down and capturing criminals such as antagonist Owen Shaw (Luke Evans).

In honor of the “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” which premieres Aug. 2, Variety compiled a list of Johnson’s best characters.
