The rapper said one of her "most important goals" of 2021 was taking care of her natural hair and has been open about her hair journey. This year, she returned from a social media break with a bang by showing off those curls.
During a 2019 interview with Refinery29, the actor revealed that she wore extensions while starring on Modern Family. Due to surgeries stemming from endometriosis and kidney dysplasia, her hair fell out. "With medications and stuff, it can make your hair fall out. So I had extensions put in for Haley to hide any of that loss. ... My hair that's growing back now is much curlier than what it used to be."
Earlier this year, the actor shared an Instagram video of her hair routine. "Braids are out," she said. "That's how much you can tell it grew because you can see all the grays. Welcome to old age, kids."
In a now-deleted 2020 tweet, the singer shared her dark curls with the caption, "get a load a dis." Ariana's mother, Joan Grande, praised the selfie, writing, "Your natural hair/curls is a world of its own... a magnificent beauty you are inside and out/made up or natural. ... I love you..."
The former first lady has rocked her natural texture at numerous events and posted it several times on social media. During her 2022 book tour, she revealed the pressure she faced while her husband was president, saying that Americans were "just getting adjusted" to having a Black family in the White House. She wanted braids but thought, "They’re not ready for it."
To prevent distractions and allow Barrack's administration to focus on larger issues, she sacrificed her curls. "Let me keep my hair straight. Let’s get healthcare passed," she recalled thinking at the time.
