Relationships are hard. Especially in a horror movie where forces — whether natural or supernatural, occult, psychosexual, or otherwise — work against a couple who, already perilously on the verge of crumbling, never stood a chance anyway.

This Halloween, one of the great scary movie genres to dive into is the relationship-horror film, a territory that directors, screenwriters, and actors have all mined to exorcise their personal demons with the help of a camera. This past summer’s “Midsommar” — Ari Aster’s sun-soaked horror story about a couple on the rocks who decide that dropping in on a pagan death cult in Sweden is a possible salve for their crumbling relationship — revived a genre that flourished in the ’60s and ’70s.
