12-Year-Old Murdered Sonic Drive-In Worker After Employee Confronted Uncle About Urinating in Parking Lot

The boy was found guilty of fatally shooting 32-year-old Matthew Davis.

A 12-year-old Texas boy was convicted last week of fatally shooting a Sonic Drive-In worker during a confrontation this spring, authorities said.

After a three-day trial followed by seven hours of deliberation, jurors in Johnson County found the Fort Worth boy guilty of murder in the May death of 32-year-old Matthew Davis, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office announced in an Oct. 8 Facebook post.

The boy, whose name was being withheld due to his age, is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.

Police arrested the boy earlier this year following the deadly May 13 shooting at a Sonic Drive-In in Keene, which is located about 30 miles south of Fort Worth.

Police responded to reports of a shooting that night at the fast food restaurant, where they found Davis on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, PEOPLE previously reported. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Investigators said in a press release at the time that Angel Gomez, 20, who arrived at the Sonic in a car with two other passengers, was confronted by a worker — later identified as Davis — after he began acting disorderly.

According to Fox 4, authorities said Gomez had been urinating in the parking lot.

When the confrontation turned physical, the boy got out of the car and fired multiple times, killing Davis, police previously said.

Gomez and the boy then fled the scene before Gomez returned and was arrested. The sheriff’s office identified Gomez as the boy’s uncle.

Authorities said they later located the boy in Rio Vista and several firearms.

The 12 year old and Gomez were both charged with murder in connection with Davis’ death. The current status of Gomez’s case is unclear.

Loved ones said in a GoFundMe campaign created after Davis’ death that he left behind a 10-year-old son.
