How to Pick the Right Place to Buy Bed Sheets Online
Consider the Brand's Certifications
If you're looking to be more eco-friendly with your sheets, you should look into the brand's certifications. The most common certification you'll want to look for is the Global Organic Textile Standard (or GOTS for short), which certifies the textiles being used are organic. This applies to all textile materials, including cotton, which is commonly used to make bed sheets. "Organic cotton starts with securing untreated, natural (non-GMO) seeds, preparing the land, and sowing the seeds," says textile expert Janet Wischnia of American Blossom Linens. Organic farming also prohibits the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, and takes into account sustainability when it comes to "conserving and regenerating soil and water, minimizing environmental exposure to harmful chemicals, and promoting biodiversity and proper land use," says Wischnia.
Another certification to look out for is Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex. This label means the product has been tested for nearly 100 hazardous chemicals (including PFAS, phthalates, formaldehyde, and some allergens). Keep in mind: a Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex certification doesn't necessarily mean the product is organic, and vice versa.
A Fair Trade certification, which companies like West Elm and Boll & Branch have obtained, means the goods were produced according to the Fairtrade International's environmental, economic, and social standards. This means the company has prioritized worker's rights, sustainable wages, safe working conditions, and biodiversity when making their products.
Some brands like Parachute go above and beyond with their certifications, being Climate Neutral Certified and GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified. A "Climate Neutral Certified" label means that from production to delivery, the company has prioritized their reduction of greenhouse gas emission. A GRS certification guarantees that recycled materials are used.
Think About the Materials
Sheets can be made of several different materials, the most common ones being cotton, percale, sateen, flannel, and Tencel.
"Cotton is smooth, soft, breathable, odor-resistant, hypoallergenic, and of course made by mother nature," says Wischnia. "It's also durable, easy to care for, holds up to frequent washing, and is a machine washable fiber that releases dirt easily when wet." Cotton sheets work for any season, making them a great option for those who don't prefer to switch out their sheets often.
Wischnia explains that percale is a material that's made of cotton fibers, featuring a matte finish and a tighter weave that lends itself to being longer lasting and naturally soft, crisp, and resistant to tears, abrasions, and pilling. "If you’re a hot, heavy sleeper, cotton percale releases body heat and wicks away sweat while you sleep," she adds, noting that while percale may initially wrinkle, it wrinkles less over time with washing and use.
Sateen has a subtle shine, is naturally wrinkle-resistant, drapes well, and boasts a smooth look without needing to be ironed, says Wischnia. But, the material comes with a few quirks. Sateen tends to trap heat more than other materials, so keep this in mind if you're a hot sleeper. Also, though the fabric starts out very soft and smooth, it's prone to pilling or snagging as the sheets age, notes Wischnia.
Tencel is a material made from cellulose fibers of eucalyptus trees, explains Wischnia. "It has a smoother and slicker feel than the crispness of cotton, which some people dislike, but it's durable, soft, and helps wick moisture for hot sleepers."
Review the Return Policy
Choosing the best sheets is a personal preference, and it helps to purchase from a website that allows you to return the item if it doesn't perform the way you want it. When it comes to texture and feel, some websites like Parachute offer the option to purchase swatches before committing to a purchase, which can help minimize returns later. Other brands like Coyuchi offer store credit for up to a year after purchase.

The cost of quality sheets can vary depending on material, brand, and size. "In my experience a high-quality set is approximately $300," says Wischnia. "Today, more and more consumers are purchasing with the idea of 'better not more' — that is, buying quality products that last many years."
You'll know you have a good quality sheet if it's made with heavier yarns, which Wischnia says will give the sheets a more substantial feeling and has an elastic that's sewn all the way around. There are also some other extra features that prove a brand is paying attention to detail. While some send sheets with a reusable bag, others have "top" and "bottom" labels sewn into them, which acts as a visual cue to help you place the fitted sheet onto your bed.
When it comes to thread count, it's a common misconception that high thread count is required for good quality. "The quality of the product is dependent on the quality of the yarns, not the number of yarns," says Wischnia. "Today, thread counts are artificially inflated because manufacturers use multi-ply yarn instead of good quality, traditional single-ply yarn." All in all, Cutler says that while sheets are something that are definitely worth splurging on, you can always try waiting for sales and stocking up then.

According to Wischnia, there are four main components that hotel operators look for when they purchase bedding: fiber, weave, color, and construction. "Hotels look for a fiber that is durable, easy to care for, and comfortable," she says, citing cotton as a popular material since it's hypoallergenic and less prone to causing an allergic reaction among hotel guests. When it comes to weave, hotels usually opt for percale as it provides a crisp yet comfortable high-end luxury feel. Color-wise, white tends to be a top choice, as it goes with every décor, so redecoration of the room does not necessitate a change of the linens.
And finally, hotels look for high-quality construction when it comes to the elastic and fit. "If the fitted sheets do not stay on the corners or the flat sheets are not big enough to tuck in, the guest will not get the good night's sleep they expect," says Wischnia. "Additionally, if holes develop after a few washes or the elastic rips off, housekeeping will have to replace bedding more often, leading to increased expenses."
