This year, 13 performers have been nominated for all four key Oscar precursor prizes: the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. On the surface, they appear to be the year’s safest acting contenders with virtually nothing to worry about in the lead-up to Oscar nominations morning. But, as Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) learned in 2023, appearing in all four lineups doesn’t always assure Academy Awards recognition.

Davis became the 11th performer since 2002 (the first year all four precursor winners were chosen from public nominations) to suffer an Oscars snub after showing up everywhere else. One year earlier, both Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”) and Caitriona Balfe (“Belfast”) got added to the roster of those saddled with this dubious achievement.

The most recent male entrant on this list is Timothée Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”, 2019), who should take comfort from the case of Leonardo DiCaprio, who finally won an Oscar in 2016 for “The Revenant” after four losses. In 2007, he was spurned by the actors branch of the academy for his turn in “The Departed,” presumably due at least in part to category confusion.

DiCaprio had earned lead BAFTA, Critics Choice, and Globe notices but was deemed supporting at the SAG Awards. That same year, he earned additional lead Critics Choice and Globe nominations for “Blood Diamond,” but was barred from doing so at the Oscars since the academy doesn’t allow same-category double-dipping. At SAG, he was nominated in lead for “Blood Diamond” only and went on to compete for the Best Actor Oscar for that role. He lost all four of those lead races to Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”).

Be sure to compare this roster of also-rans with the 18 performers who defied the odds and reaped Oscar bids without contending at any of these awards. The ones who accomplished this singular feat at the expense of those who ran the board are indicated below in italics.

BEST ACTOR
Tom Hanks, “Captain Phillips” (2014)
bumped by Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), who had contended at BAFTA and Globes.

Tilda Swinton, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2012)

Emma Thompson, “Saving Mr. Banks” (2014)
bumped by Amy Adams (“American Hustle”), who had contended at BAFTA and Globes.

Amy Adams, “Arrival” (2017)
bumped by Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”) or Ruth Negga (“Loving”), who had both contended at Critics Choice and Globes.

The other three slots went to: SAG nominee Jackie Earle Haley (“Little Children”); SAG and Critics Choice nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”); and Globe nominee Mark Wahlberg (“The Departed”).

Daniel Brühl, “Rush” (2014)
bumped by Jonah Hill, “The Wolf of Wall Street”

Timothée Chalamet, “Beautiful Boy” (2019)
bumped by Sam Elliott (“A Star Is Born”), who had contended at Critics Choice and SAG, or Sam Rockwell (“Vice”), who had contended at BAFTA and Globes.
