11-Year-Old Wash. Girl Is Allegedly Killed by Her Brother, Who Then Shoots Himself: Police

Lilly Stolworthy was fatally shot in Spokane

An 11-year-old girl was shot and killed by her brother, who then turned the gun on himself, police allege.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a female in the middle of the road Sunday afternoon. The girl was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries, police say.

Witnesses told police that the girl was contacted by an adult male sibling before the sound of a gunshot or vehicle backfire was heard, according to the sheriff’s office.

The girl’s adult sibling was found slumped over in a car with a pistol in his hand not long after, police say. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, though it is not immediately clear what his present condition is. KHQ, citing his mother, reported that he has officially been declared dead, though he is on life support to make organ arrangements, while KXLY reported he was not expected to survive. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to a call from PEOPLE.

The adult sibling has not been identified by authorities, and the status of possible charges against him was not immediately clear.

The 11-year-old was identified by family in reports from KHQ and as Lilea “Lilly” Stolworthy.

The siblings’ mother, Darel Stolworthy, told KHQ Lilly had bipolar disorder and struggled with mental health.

A memorial for Lilly was held and drew over 100 people to celebrate her life, according to The Spokesman-Review. At the memorial Darel spoke to the crowd.

“As I look out around to all these faces that were a part of Lilly’s life, it brings me joy,” she said.
