About 100 people storm Area 51 gate, two people arrested

The storming of Area 51 is officially underway, though so far the turnabout is a bit smaller than originally anticipated.

As a refresher, upwards of two million people signed up for the viral Storm Area 51 Facebook event. “If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens,” the event page read. In the proceeding weeks, plans for the raid evolved to become a full-fledged three-day music and arts festival. However, the event’s creator ultimately moved the festivities to Las Vegas, hoping to avoid a Fyre Fest-like debacle in the small town of Rachel, Nevada. Nevertheless, the U.S. Air Force took the threat of an Area 51 raid seriously enough to bring in additional security resources. They also cautioned that any trespassers would be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of local and military law.

Despite this, a group of 100 people showed up outside the Area 51 gate early Friday morning, according to the New York Times. Per The Associated Press, at least two people were arrested: one person was charged with indecent exposure after urinating on the facility’s gate, another person was detained after attempting to go underneath the gate.

For the most part, however, the stormers were well behaved. According to the Times, “the celebratory crowd, some of whom wore tin foil hats, chanted about aliens and admired the cuteness of a dog that accompanied a man wearing camouflage and had a rifle strapped to his chest.”
